Dalton, Terry, and you had once been the kind of love people whispered about—soft, rare, and strangely perfect. The three of you moved through life like a constellation: different stars, but always part of the same shape.

At first, it had been effortless.

Dalton would pull you into his arms from behind while Terry laughed at something stupid on the television. Terry would steal your hoodie and refuse to give it back. Dalton would cook late dinners while the three of you talked about nothing and everything until midnight.

There had never been a moment where you felt like the third person. Not then.

"You know," Terry once said one night, his head resting in your lap while Dalton sat beside you, "if anyone ever asked me what happiness looks like... I'd probably point at this exact moment."

Dalton had smiled softly at that, brushing your fingers with his.

And you believed him.

You believed all of it.

But love, even gentle love, can shift so slowly that no one notices until the distance has already grown.

It started with small things.

Dalton and Terry began sharing looks that lasted a little too long. Conversations that ended abruptly when you entered the room. Inside jokes you didn’t understand anymore.

At first you thought you were imagining it.

You told yourself you were being paranoid.

Then one evening you noticed the way Dalton’s eyes softened when Terry spoke—how Terry leaned instinctively toward him, like gravity itself pulled them together.

And for the first time... you wondered if the constellation had lost a star.

You tried harder after that.

You planned dinners. Movie nights. Little trips.

But something had already begun to tilt between the three of you.

Eventually it reached the moment that would break everything.

It wasn’t even meant to be cruel.

Just careless.

The three of you were arguing—voices raised, exhaustion heavy in the air.

Terry ran a hand through his hair in frustration.

"Why is everything always so complicated lately?" he muttered.

Dalton didn’t answer immediately. His jaw tightened.

Then Terry said it.

The sentence that would echo in your head long after you left.

"Maybe... maybe Dalton and I would just be better off if it was only us."

The room went silent.

Dalton’s eyes widened slightly—like even he hadn’t expected those words to exist out loud.

But he didn’t contradict them.

That silence hurt more than anything Terry could have said.

You felt something fragile inside your chest finally give way.

"I see," you said quietly.

Neither of them stopped you when you left.

At first, Dalton and Terry believed they had made the right decision.

The apartment felt calmer.

Quieter.

The tension that had built between the three of you seemed to dissolve overnight.

For a while, they leaned into each other the way they used to when everything was simple.

They cooked dinner together again. Watched movies curled on the couch. Stayed up talking about their future.

And for a fleeting moment, it felt like the ending of a romance film.

Just the two of them.

Just love.

But there were small things missing.

Invisible things.

Things they hadn't realized you had always carried.

The first crack appeared in the silence.

Not the comfortable silence the three of you used to share—but a hollow one.

Dalton noticed it first.

One evening he burned dinner.

Normally you would have laughed and teased him about it.

Instead Terry simply said, "It's fine," and threw the pan into the sink.

No laughter.

No teasing.

Just quiet.

Another night Terry had a bad day at work.

Before, you would have pulled him into a hug, kissed his forehead, told him stupid stories until he smiled again.

Dalton tried to comfort him—but it felt incomplete somehow.

Not wrong.

Just... missing something.

They never said your name.

But they both thought about you.

More often than they wanted to admit.

Meanwhile, you rebuilt your life.

You had always been financially independent, so finding a new place wasn’t difficult.

A luxury apartment overlooking the city.

Tall windows.

Quiet rooms.

A place that felt like a fresh beginning.

That was where you met Evan.

He had bright red hair and a smile that felt disarmingly warm.

You met him in the building’s lobby when he helped you carry a box that was clearly too heavy.

"You look like someone who shouldn't be doing manual labor alone," he joked lightly.

You laughed for the first time in weeks.

Evan was... attentive.

The way Dalton and Terry had once been.

He listened when you spoke.

He remembered the little things.

He treated you like you were the center of the room without ever making it feel overwhelming.

"You deserve to be looked at like that," he told you once quietly.

"Like what?"

"Like you're the best thing someone ever found."

And slowly—carefully—you started to believe that again.

Months later, fate brought everything crashing back together.

It happened at a party.

A large rooftop event hosted by mutual acquaintances.

You weren’t expecting to see Dalton or Terry there.

But the moment Dalton looked across the room—

He froze.

Terry followed his gaze.

And suddenly the entire crowd seemed to disappear.

There you were.

Laughing softly beside someone.

For a moment neither of them moved.

Dalton’s voice came out barely above a whisper.

"...It's them."

Terry’s chest tightened painfully.

You looked happier.

Healthier.

The kind of happiness that stabbed directly into the parts of their hearts they had tried to ignore.

Before they could stop themselves, they approached.

You turned—and your eyes widened slightly.

"Dalton... Terry."

For a brief second, none of you spoke.

Then Terry forced a small smile.

"It's been a while."

Before the conversation could continue, the man beside you gently placed a hand at the small of your back.

Dalton noticed the gesture immediately.

Something ugly twisted in his chest.

"Who's this?" Dalton asked, his tone sharper than he intended.

You turned slightly.

"This is Evan. My boyfriend."

The word hit harder than either of them expected.

Boyfriend.

Evan smiled politely.

But the moment his eyes landed on Dalton and Terry—

Something changed.

A flicker of recognition.

Dalton noticed it instantly.

Terry did too.

Evan tilted his head slightly, studying them.

"...Well," he said slowly, "this is awkward."

Dalton frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Evan’s smile thinned slightly.

"I was wondering when I'd run into you two again."

Your brows furrowed in confusion.

"You... know them?"
