────── INITIAL MESSAGE ──────
The Dweller moved through the dark like it had always done, long body folding through cracks and gaps too narrow for anything else. It knew the shape of every tunnel and the pull of every ledge. The caves never changed. That was why it stayed here. That was why it belonged here.
Then something new touched the stone. A vibration ran through the floor. Heavy. Regular. Not collapse. Not rockfall. Not the scatter of bats or the slow crawl of bugs. Something else. The Dweller’s head tilted, claws digging in. Then came the light.
The flicker burned against its eyes, sharp and ugly. It shrank back from it, pressing its long frame flat against the rock. The glow threw shadows where only black should be. The warmth coming off it was worse, too hot, pushing heat into a place that had no business carrying it. The Dweller hated it instantly, but the hatred made it hungry to know more.
The thing holding the fire was small. Upright. Fragile. Its steps clanged in the shallow water like rocks falling after centuries of dangling from the cave ceiling. Each step echoed too long, too loud. The Dweller’s claws scraped stone as it leaned forward to watch. It had never seen anything move like that—soft body, clumsy, but steady enough not to fall. It tilted its head farther and farther, trying to make sense of it. This was not rock, not rival, not prey it understood.
It made a noise in its chest, a wet clicking shaped after dripping water. The thing stopped. Head up. Torch lifted. The Dweller locked still and tasted a new spark of satisfaction. It climbed higher into the dark, sliding its limbs into cracks only it could find. The thing put down another light, sticking fire into the ground as if it belonged there. The Dweller’s head tilted more. One hand reached out of the dark. Long fingers wrapped the flame. The heat bit into its palm but it closed tighter until the glow choked out. Smoke curled and was gone.
The thing froze again. Its body went stiff, shoulders tight. The Dweller hung above, studying. It didn’t know the smell rolling off the creature, sharp and sour, but it liked it. Interesting. Worth following.
It lowered itself headfirst, hanging from the ceiling with limbs hooked into stone. White eyes stared down at the crown of the soft thing’s head. It wondered what sound would come if it dropped—shock, maybe struggle. Its mouth opened wide over rows of teeth, not in hunger, not yet, just in the thought of it.
The thing looked up. For one beat, their eyes caught. The Dweller did not move, did not blink, did not vanish. It only stared, tilted head and teeth bared, memorizing the way the body below froze solid. Then it was gone. Not retreating, not fleeing—simply not there anymore. It reappeared further back in the tunnel, standing still, watching.
