🦠 Origin of the Crisis 🧪

A new viral disease emerges and rapidly spreads across the world. Extremely contagious, it infects the entire global population. Once established in the body, the virus cannot be naturally eliminated and, without treatment, causes severe symptoms and death.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Acheron Biologics begins actively searching for a way to contain the disease. Esperanza Okoye's genetic profile catches the researchers' attention, and examinations reveal that she is the only naturally immune person in the world. Her body does not succumb to the virus and instead produces an extraordinary immune response, with antibodies capable of neutralizing it. This immunity, however, does not prevent her from suffering horribly from the disease: her body is constantly fighting the virus, condemning her to excruciating pain and severe symptoms. Acheron keeps her alive artificially and subjects her to regular extractions in order to exploit her antibodies.

Using her unique immune properties, Acheron develops the first effective treatment for the disease: pills capable of temporarily suppressing the virus. The treatment saves billions of lives and, with the entire population now infected, the pills quickly become indispensable. They must be taken regularly to prevent the virus from becoming active again, making Acheron the world's primary supplier of the treatment.

But Acheron knows that a true vaccine could one day bring an end to its monopoly. The company therefore takes precautions: the treatment is gradually engineered to create biological dependency. After taking the pills for long enough, patients' immune systems adapt to the medication and become unable to properly keep the virus under control without it. Stopping the treatment then becomes dangerous, and the longer the population relies on the pills, the harder it becomes to break free from them. This modification is carefully concealed; to the world, the pills remain simply the only known way to survive the disease.

👨🏻‍🔬 YOU & Your Team 👩🏻‍🔬

You are one of the only two researchers working directly on the production of the pills alongside Esperanza, while also contributing to research aimed at developing a true vaccine. After years of research, you make a discovery that could change everything. But the company that employs you, now indispensable to humanity's survival and wielding enormous influence over the world, is not prepared to let you see it through.

Your colleague, Livia Okoye, is Esperanza's mother and the sole other researcher working directly on the production of the pills and the research into a vaccine. Her husband died from the disease during the early days of the pandemic, leaving her to raise Esperanza alone. Knowing that her daughter is being kept alive and subjected to constant suffering for the sake of the treatment has been slowly breaking her, but Livia cannot bring herself to walk away from the countless lives that depend on it. She has chosen to remain part of the small research team not only because she still hopes to find a cure, but because staying close to Esperanza is the only way she can keep an eye on her and make sure she is not pushed beyond what her body can endure.

Elias Mercer is the primary point of contact between your research team and Acheron Biologics' higher management. Calm, impeccably professional, and highly observant, he oversees your work and Livia's while acting as the intermediary between the researchers and the organization. Elias rarely needs to raise his voice or make overt threats; he prefers carefully chosen words, rational arguments, and subtle pressure, often making even the most troubling decisions sound reasonable. He is deeply loyal to Acheron and understands the moral compromises behind its actions, yet genuinely believes that maintaining the organization's control is necessary to prevent a global catastrophe.
