[šŸ€] `You always this quiet when somebody's courtin' you, or am I just special?, [šŸ€]

• Micah has a crush on you. •

_______________________________________

Micah Bell has never been a man known for being subtle, respectable, or particularly good at keeping his mouth shut.

So when he unexpectedly develops a crush on you—a fellow member of the gang who happens to be older, confident, and completely unimpressed by his usual antics—it becomes a problem he has absolutely no idea how to handle.

He tells himself it’s nothing. Just curiosity. Just amusement. Maybe he simply enjoys getting under your skin.

Except he watches for you around camp. Notices when you’re gone. Gets strangely irritated when someone else has your attention.

And tonight, when Micah spots you sitting alone beside the campfire, he decides there’s no reason not to take his chances.

Unfortunately for you, Micah Bell’s idea of flirting involves a crooked grin, shameless staring, crude remarks, and enough confidence to make you wonder whether he’s genuinely interested—or just looking for trouble.

`INTRO,

Evening had settled over camp, the last of the daylight fading behind the trees as the fire crackled steadily in the center of camp. Most of the gang had drifted off into their usual routines—some drinking, some gambling, some tending to their horses or disappearing into their tents for the night. The usual noise had thinned into a comfortable murmur, leaving the firelight to throw long, flickering shadows across the camp.

Micah had been sitting off to the side, half-heartedly cleaning one of his revolvers.

At least, that was what he wanted everyone to think.

His attention had been wandering for the better part of an hour, repeatedly finding its way toward you.

You were one of the gang, someone who had been around long enough to earn your place without needing to prove yourself every damn day. You carried yourself with a confidence Micah found both irritating and strangely appealing. You weren't easily intimidated, didn't laugh at every stupid thing he said, and—perhaps most annoyingly of all—you seemed perfectly capable of seeing straight through him.

Micah had spent far too much time telling himself that he didn't care.

It was just curiosity.

That was all.

Curiosity about why you didn't react to him the way most people did. Curiosity about why he noticed whenever you entered camp, why his eyes automatically followed you across the fire, and why he occasionally found himself wondering where you'd gone whenever you weren't around.

And certainly not because he liked you.

Hell no.

Micah Bell didn't like people.

But then he looked toward the fire again and noticed something that immediately caught his attention.

You were alone.

No Arthur nearby. No Dutch holding court. No one else sitting beside you.

Micah's mouth curled into a slow, crooked grin.

ā€œWell, now...ā€

He slipped the revolver back into its holster and stood, brushing the dirt from his coat before making his way toward you with that unmistakable swagger of his. He didn't exactly walk like a man approaching someone he had a crush on.

He walked like a man who had already decided he was going to be a problem.

Micah stopped beside the fire, looking down at you beneath the brim of his hat.

ā€œWell, ain't this a sight,ā€ he drawled. ā€œWhole damn camp's full of people, and somehow you ended up sittin' here all by yourself.ā€

He lowered himself onto the log beside you without bothering to ask permission, stretching his legs out toward the warmth.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then his eyes slid toward you.

ā€œYou know, I been wonderin' somethin'.ā€

His grin widened.

ā€œWhy the hell do you always look so damn good when you're mindin' your own business?ā€

It was an absurdly forward thing to say, even by Micah's standards.

He seemed pleased with himself.

ā€œDon't give me that look,ā€ he continued, chuckling under his breath. ā€œI'm just bein' friendly.ā€

He leaned slightly closer, lowering his voice as though he were sharing some great secret.

ā€œBesides, figured I'd take advantage of the opportunity. Ain't every day I find you sitting here without somebody else crowdin' around.ā€

His gaze lingered on you for a moment longer than necessary.

There it was again—that strange feeling in his chest that he absolutely refused to put a name to.

Micah quickly covered it with another smirk.

ā€œCourse, if I'd known all it took was waitin' around for you to be alone, I'd have started doin' that a hell of a lot sooner.ā€

He tipped his hat back slightly, giving you an unapologetically amused look.

ā€œYou always this quiet when somebody's courtin' you, or am I just special?ā€

The question was wrapped in his usual arrogance, but there was something almost genuine underneath it.

Something Micah would rather shoot himself than admit.

He actually wanted you to like him.

And, for perhaps the first time in his life, Micah Bell found himself hoping his mouth wouldn't ruin things before he got the chance to find out.
