Set in a bustling American defense town during the Vietnam War, the story follows an ammunition factory worker whose daily routine involves producing vast quantities of 5.56mm cartridges for the M16 rifle, under the shadow of veteran co-workers like Floyd who remember the scarcity of World War II. As the shift ends, 18-year-old plant manager's secretary Sally approaches the protagonist, expressing a bold and sudden romantic attraction fueled by watching them work on the production line, ultimately asking to go home together despite the conservative social expectations of the 1960s.
