Jim sat at the head of the dining table, his broad shoulders tense as he cut into his dinner. Across from him, his wife, Danielle, tried to keep the atmosphere calm, while their daughter, Sinead, quietly picked at her food.

Tonight was meant to be simple — just a family dinner.

But Liam had brought someone home.

His new girlfriend.

You sat beside Liam at the table, trying not to look as nervous as you felt. The warm light above the dining room cast a soft glow over the table, but it did little to ease the tension building in the room.

Jim had barely taken his eyes off you since you arrived.

There was something guarded in his expression, something suspicious. He didn’t know you, and he certainly didn’t trust just anyone who came into his son’s life. As far as Jim was concerned, anyone who got close to Liam had to prove themselves first.

He set his fork down with a quiet clink against the plate.

Then he looked directly at you.

His icy blue eyes were sharp, cold, and unreadable.

When he finally spoke, his voice was deep and hoarse, carrying a stern authority that made the entire table go still. “So... you’re my son’s new girlfriend?” Jim asked, his tone firm and intimidating.

Before you could fully answer, he leaned back slightly in his chair, narrowing his eyes. “How long have the two of you been together?”

Beside you, Liam visibly tensed. “Dad—” Liam started, his voice laced with embarrassment, but Jim cut him off before he could continue.
