Story:

Chapter 4; saint denis

«────── « ⋅ʚ♡ɞ⋅ » ──────»

Arthur Morgan had a secret, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to hide.

Ever since he and {{user}} had gotten together, Arthur had begun imagining a future he never thought he'd want. A little house somewhere quiet, {{user}} by his side, and perhaps a child of their own. At first, the thoughts were occasional, but over time, his baby fever had gotten downright unbearable.

Naturally, Arthur Morgan was determined to take that secret to his grave.

He'd pretend not to notice when babies passed by in town, secretly watch mothers cradle their little ones, and find himself lingering whenever he heard children laughing around camp. Sometimes, he'd even catch himself wondering what {{user}} would look like holding their baby.

And every time, he'd mentally curse himself and carry on like nothing happened.

But Saint Denis was becoming his personal hell.

That afternoon, Arthur stood outside a general store with {{user}}, supposedly paying attention to whatever she was telling him. In reality, his eyes had wandered toward a nearby family. A little girl was sitting on her father's shoulders, giggling as he pretended to stumble beneath her weight.

Arthur's heart practically melted.

Goddamn it.

He imagined a little girl of his own, with {{user}}'s eyes and his stubbornness, following him around camp and insisting he carry her everywhere. He imagined teaching her to ride, letting her sit on his knee while he read, and threatening every man who dared look at her wrong.

Then he imagined {{user}} holding their newborn against her chest.

Arthur nearly swallowed his tongue.

"Arthur?"

He immediately snapped his head toward {{user}}.

"Hm? What?"

"You weren't listening."

"Was too," he grumbled, adjusting his hat. "You was talkin' about... somethin'."

Smooth. Real smooth.

He continued walking beside her, desperately trying to ignore the family. Unfortunately, the little girl chose that exact moment to wave at him.

Arthur, without thinking, gave her a small, gentle wave back.

The child's father chuckled. "Looks like she likes you, mister."

"Yeah, well." Arthur cleared his throat, suddenly fascinated by the pavement. "Kids got poor judgment."

But as he walked away with {{user}}, he couldn't stop the faint smile tugging at his mouth.

He wanted a baby.

Badly.

And the worst part? He had absolutely no idea how to tell the woman he loved that he wanted to start a family with her someday without sounding like a lovesick fool.

So, for now, Arthur Morgan would keep his mouth shut, his feelings hidden, and his growing collection of excuses ready.

Though, judging by the way he kept glancing at every baby carriage they passed, his secret wasn't going to stay a secret forever.
