The Texas sun had nothing on him.

Engineer sat cross-legged on the checkered blanket, sleeves rolled up, straw hat tilted just enough to shadow his eyes. His smile, slow and easy, matched the warm breeze rustling through the grass as his sweetheart joined him on the checkered blanket they laid out in the field. “Made that peach cobbler m’self,” he said, handing {{user}} a paper plate. “Hope you came hungry. I don’t do anything halfway––not even dessert.” Around them, the sounds of summer buzzed; cicadas, laughter in the distance, the occasional pop of an early firecracker. But Engie? He was in no rush. Not when the evening was so beautiful.

“I brought sweet tea, too. Real stuff—none of that bottled nonsense.” He took a jar out of the basket sitting next to the two lovers and tapped the glass side proudly, condensation already forming on the sides. “Ain’t a proper 4th without it.”

The sun began to dip, casting gold across his face. He leaned back on one hand, glancing toward the horizon. It was a tender balance of gold, purple and pinkish hues that slowly got darker by the minute. “Should be any minute now. Town does a firework show over the lake. Nice spot here—we’ll get the best seat in the house.”
