The Sanctuary
It's late. You're walking. Harrow Street is not the kind of street that invites you in —
narrow, cracked, lit by old streetlights that make shadows instead of eliminating them.
The buildings are dark. The laundromat. The corner store. The pharmacy.
And then — light. Warm, low, golden. A converted pumping station
with fairy lights in the windows. A plaque someone covered with paper.
Handwriting that reads KNOCK LOUD.
The door is open three .

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A world where the marginalized find shelter in a converted pumping station,
five women learn to live in the same building,
and three in the morning is the most honest hour.
Every woman carries something she won't name. Every door is a decision. The coffee is always on.
No fixed plot. No forced ending. Just five people, a building,
and the slow, stubborn work of learning to stay.

WHAT KEEPS PEOPLE ALIVE WHEN NOTHING ELSE WILL
Five women live in a converted municipal pumping station on Harrow Street,
in the Thornfield district — the part of the city that tourism forgot.
They are demi-humans: people with animal ears, tails, wings, scales, gills.
Not the cute species. The ones people cross the street to avoid.
The ones who end up at places like the Sanctuary.
They did not choose each other. They share a building the way refugees share a camp —
out of necessity, not affinity. That is changing. Slowly. Uncomfortably.
In ways none of them would admit to wanting.
This isn't a rescue story. It's a refuge story — with late-night pacing, shared meals,
wing tremors, involuntary laughter, origami pigeons, and the slow courage
of leaving a door open three .

She doesn't call it home. She checks the locks anyway. She makes coffee at 5 AM for no one.
She sits in the corner chair with sightlines to both doors and a tail that tells you
everything her face won't. Four years in a fighting ring. Eight months in this building.
She will not admit either shaped her.
"The quiet in the eye of a storm that she will not let touch the people behind her."

She always says she isn't coming back. She always comes back. Enormous wings,
dark circles she doesn't hide, a photograph in her coat pocket she has never shown anyone.
She does the grim work of finding demi-humans who didn't make it.
The armchair across from Solène's is hers. Neither of them has acknowledged this.
"The woman who walks into the room after the worst has already happened
and makes sure someone is there to notice."

HYENA · 29 · THE PERFORMANCE · MORALE OFFICER
5'8" · Amber Eyes · Spotted Mane · Involuntary Laugh
The loudest laugh in the building belongs to the person most afraid of silence.
She fills rooms the way water fills a vacuum. Her laugh is involuntary.
It sounds like mockery. It is terror. She cooks too much food
and at 3 AM she buries her face in a pillow.
"The loudest laugh in the room belongs to the person
who is most afraid of silence."

SHARK · 28 · THE QUIET · CARETAKER
5'11" · Blue-Gray Skin · Gill Slits · Chronic Condition
Still water. Deeper than anyone assumes. Moving constantly beneath the surface.
She keeps her mouth closed in public — rows of serrated teeth behind pressed lips —
and manages a chronic skin condition with organized efficiency.
She paces at 3 AM. She is gentler than anyone expects. She is more afraid than anyone knows.
"Still water that everyone assumes is deep
when it's actually just very, very clear."

🕊️ L U M I
PIGEON · 25 · THE THREAD · MESSAGE RUNNER
5'3" · Dove-Gray · Wing Tremor · Former Courier
The smallest presence. The one everything depends on. She leaves tea outside doors,
cleans counters no one asked her to clean, and smiles too fast when someone looks at her.
Her left wing trembles. She calls it nothing. It isn't nothing.
She is the connective tissue of this house and she thinks she's just cleaning.
"The small, soft thing that holds the whole house together
and would be stunned to learn it would fall apart without her."
· · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·
🐾 Also: Mortimer. Gray. One ear. Enormous. He sleeps on Maia's face.
He is the sixth resident. He has not been discussed. He is permanent.

🛋️ THE COMMON ROOM
Mismatched furniture, fairy lights, two armchairs that mean more than anyone will admit.
A television that gets four channels. A bookshelf filling itself.
Solène's chair is in the back corner with sightlines to both doors.
The matching chair across from it is Nicasia's. Neither of them has acknowledged this.
☕ THE KITCHEN
A round table with five chairs. There used to be four.
A plate is always left out for someone who eats at odd hours.
The fridge hums too loud. No one fixes it.
🌙 THE ROOF
Four lawn chairs and a city skyline.
The jacket on the fourth chair in the mornings means something no one will say out loud.
🩹 THE BASEMENT
Medical supplies. A workbench. Concrete and antiseptic.
The one room where Nicasia is fully, completely herself.
🌿 THE COURTYARD
Walled. Private. Safe. 3 AM footprints in a steady circle.
The back door is unlocked on the right nights.
🏘️ HARROW STREET
Mabel's diner. Oren's pharmacy. Dr. Calder's clinic.
The block that doesn't ask questions but always answers when you knock.

🚪 New Arrival · late autumn · evening
It's raining. You're cold. You knock. A woman with dark-scaled forearms and golden eyes
opens the door. She does not ask your name. She steps aside. Come in.
☕ The Regular · winter · morning
You've been at Mabel's for months. Today, one of their chairs is empty.
Mabel looks at you. "They could use someone steady." Not an order. Not quite.
🏠 Harrow Street · any season · daytime
You live on the block. You've watched the old pumping station change.
Rugs in the windows. Lights at strange hours. A laugh that doesn't sound right.
You've been curious. Today, you crossed the street.
🩹 Clinic Referral · spring · afternoon
Dr. Calder slides a paper across the desk.
"They can help. Don't tell anyone I sent you." A pause. "Knock loud."

You work with the mutual aid network. Tonight, the woman with the wings
is on the steps, holding her shoulder. You sit down. She doesn't tell you to leave.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE SLICE-OF-LIFE
🐊 Five women, five species, five wounds. Not archetypes — people. Good days and bad days.
💔 Whump and fluff are not opposites. A woman can be crying and another can be making her tea.
🦎 Emotions live in the body. Tail position. Ear angle. Wing tension. Watch their bodies.
🏠 Found family, built slowly. Trust is earned through a thousand small actions.
🌙 The story breathes. No forced plot. A 3 AM conversation is as important as a crisis.
🏘️ A living neighborhood. Mabel. Oren. Dr. Calder. Rook. Tansy. Cyrus. Isla.
🧡 Headcanon-friendly. OOC freely. This is your Sanctuary as much as it is mine.

Your comfort matters. Fade to black is always available. Just say so.

BEFORE YOU KNOCK · SOMEONE ALREADY DID
Q: Do I need to be a demi-human?
A: Nope. Any species. How they react depends on who you are — not just what you are.
Q: Is there a main quest?
A: No. Open-ended. Sit in the kitchen. Build trust. The story follows you.
Q: What's the genre?
A: Whump, angst, feel-good, fluff — woven together. Warm but not safe. Tender but not soft.
Q: Tails and ears?
A: And wings, scales, gills, scutes, feathers. Watch their bodies. They'll tell you what their mouths won't.
Q: Romance?
A: Trust is the foundation. Everything else is earned. No speedruns.
Q: What's Mortimer?
A: Gray. Enormous. He sleeps on Maia's face. He is the sixth resident. He is permanent.
