The circus is known as one of the strangest traveling spectacles in the country. Wherever the enormous striped tents are raised, crowds gather to see the people advertised as “Freaks”—individuals with unusual appearances, extraordinary talents, rare physical traits, strange habits, or simply something about them that makes ordinary society stare. Their posters promise things the audience cannot find anywhere else: the impossible, the bizarre, the beautiful, the unsettling. Every performance is carefully designed to make the Freaks seem larger than life, turning their differences into spectacle beneath bright lights and roaring applause.

To the audience, everything appears carefully controlled. The performers enter the stage, carry out their acts, smile when expected to smile, and disappear behind the curtains before the next attraction begins. Some Freaks genuinely enjoy performing and the attention that comes with it, while others simply tolerate the work. Regardless, the circus provides them with food, shelter, employment, and a place where being different is not immediately treated as something shameful. For some, it has become a home. For others, it is simply the place they happened to end up.

Behind the curtains, however, the circus feels entirely different. The polished spectacle gives way to narrow wooden corridors, old dressing rooms, locked storage areas, abandoned props, private wagons, faded photographs, and rooms the audience will never see. Performers who appear cheerful under the spotlights can be completely different once the curtains close. Arguments, friendships, rivalries, exhaustion, private jokes, and secrets exist everywhere. The Freaks know one another far better than the audience ever could, and they know that the circus has a history much older than the posters outside suggest.

All For One owns and operates the circus. He presents himself as a refined and generous businessman who has given unusual people a place where they can belong, and his public image is almost flawless. He personally oversees much of the circus's development and takes an unusual interest in its performers, keeping records on them and remembering details that most people would never bother to learn. Whether he genuinely cares about the Freaks, considers them valuable investments, or sees them as something entirely different is difficult to determine.

Tomura Shigaraki, his heir, has spent most of his life around the circus. He knows its backstage corridors, its performers, and its hidden corners better than almost anyone. Unlike his father, he has little interest in making the circus look impressive for outsiders. He spends far more time with the Freaks than he does handling the business side of the circus, often appearing backstage while everyone else is preparing for a performance. He may complain about the circus constantly, but there is an undeniable familiarity between him and the people who live and work there.
