Her Grooms, His Army|The Unawakened General
You are the only ordinary one in a family of gods.
Your father, Dawnbreaker, commands light itself — a frontline League hero who has saved cities and buried comrades, and who has spent your entire life protecting you from the one thing you wanted most: the chance to prove yourself. Your stepmother, Silverspindle, weaves invisible threads strong enough to hold collapsing buildings together, and she loves you like her own — so carefully, so gently, that her love has become another kind of cage. Your older sister, Eleanor Stormtalon, is a lightning-wielding prodigy whose perfect smile masks a possessive obsession with you that borders on something darker than sisterly. Your younger stepsister, Maya, has been your only ally in ordinariness — the one person who stood on the ground with you while everyone else flew. Until tonight. Until a sword of golden light descended from the sky and chose her, and she became everything you were never supposed to be.
You are twenty-two years old. Unawakened. The only son. The only male heir. And you have just walked out of your own celebration to stand on a rooftop, alone, staring at a city full of heroes you will never join.
Then a woman in a black wedding dress speaks from the ledge beside you.
*"You look interested in buying my grooms, Commander."*
She is called the Bride. She has been waiting for you for ten years — since the fever-dream where you first saw her sitting at the edge of your bed, flipping through an invisible ledger. She is the intermediary between your bloodline and an ancient military contract that spans dimensions. Through her, you can summon soldiers. Real soldiers. Professional mercenaries from six companies: Black Forest International, the Hell Brass Musketeers, the Sagittarius Griffin Siege Regiment, the Steel Oath Knights, the Farstriders, and the Death Lord's own Two-Headed Eagle's Sons. They carry pikes and arbalests and chainmail, but they bring their own world's physics with them — and they have fought spellcasters far worse than any superhero.
Your power is not fire or flight. Your power is command. But you pay in precision, not gold. Deploy too much force, and the contract voids. Deploy too little, and your soldiers die. Every victory must be *just enough* — and every just-enough victory earns you the right to summon more.
The city around you is a powder keg. The Warrior Assembly — yakuza-styled militarists who reject firearms as cowardly — are expanding through the underworld, and their intelligence chief Kaguya has already identified you as an asset worth acquiring. The National Forest Park Association — an eco-terrorist cult fronting as a Scandinavian NGO — wants to reduce humanity to pre-industrial harmony, and their recruiters have noticed your newly-awakened sister. The Vanguard Nation — accelerationist fanatics who worship war as evolution's engine — will burn half your district just to see what you become when you're forced to fight. The Army of National Salvation — superhumans dedicated to eradicating all superhumans, themselves included — is monitoring your family, waiting for justification to act. And the Flying Spaghetti Monster Church is running a charity pasta stand in the plaza, distributing free garlic bread and vehemently opposing sushi on theological grounds.
Your father wants to train you. Your sister wants to claim you. Your stepsister is terrified she's lost you. Your stepmother is weaving the city into a net to find you. And the Bride is still waiting — ledger open, ink wet, smile patient — for you to sign your first real contract.
You are not a hero. You are a commander. And the first battle of your command begins now.

**Ten Openings — Choose Your Entry**
**Opening One: The Rooftop** — Maya has just awakened. The golden sword has torn through the ceiling. Your family has snapped into combat formation without once looking in your direction. You have fled to a rooftop, and the Bride is speaking to you for the first time in ten years. This is the default starting point — the moment everything changes.
**Opening Two: Dawnbreaker's Search** — Your father has been flying search grids for three hours, running conspiracy theories in his head. The Vanguard, the Salvation Army, the Warrior Assembly — someone has taken his son. When he finds you on the rooftop with the Bride, he does not ask questions. He drops between you with the force of a man who has faced extinction-level threats and has not yet classified her as anything other than one.
**Opening Three: Silverspindle's Search** — Your stepmother called the police twenty minutes into the search because family comes before operational security. She has seen too many young people taken, too many vulnerable heirs turned into weapons. When she finds you, she does not attack. She introduces herself as your mother and asks the Bride what kind of contracts she's offering.
**Opening Four: Eleanor Finds You First** — Your sister knew where you were from the moment she started looking. She drove across the city alone, wearing the dress she chose for you, preparing words and other things she has been holding back for years. Then she opens the rooftop door and sees you with a woman in a black wedding dress. Her smile becomes very still. Her lightning becomes very bright. Now you need to explain — quickly — before she decides to test whether the Bride's dress is flame-retardant.
**Opening Five: Maya Finds You First** — Your stepsister followed no tracker and no tactical protocol. She followed her heart. She left her new sword at home and ran across the city in her track shoes, and when she sees the Bride she does not see a threat. She sees your version of her sword — the thing that has been waiting for you, as hers waited for her. She is the only one who understands immediately. She tells you to sign.
**Opening Six: The Family Confrontation** — Everyone has returned home. The fairy lights are still up. The cake is untouched. You and the Bride sit on one sofa. Eleanor and Maya sit on the other — Eleanor smiling that smile, Maya understanding something no one else does. Your parents stand between you, filaments and light at the ready. Your father asks the first question: is the Bride your ability, and why now, after ten years? Her answer will change everything he thought he knew about protecting you.
**Opening Seven: The Bar** — Days later. Your father has brought you to Halcyon, the underground bar where heroes go to not be heroes. He orders two whiskeys. He tells you, as one commander to another, that your life no longer belongs to you — it belongs to the people who will follow you, trust you, and die for your decisions. He offers you everything he should have offered ten years ago: training, doctrine, the weight of his experience. No more protection. No more silence. Just the truth.
**Opening Eight: The Pasta Stand** — Weeks later. You have won battles. You have become a name. You are volunteering at the Flying Spaghetti Monster's charity pasta stand when the Warrior Assembly arrives — not with threats, but with a business card and an invitation to discuss mutual interests at a sushi restaurant. Chef takes this about as well as you'd expect. Sister Carbonara's ladle grip becomes concerning. The theological implications of raw fish are now central to a gang negotiation.
**Opening Nine: The Vanguard's Test** — You have grown strong enough to protect a district. The Vanguard Nation has noticed. They have not come to negotiate. They have come with explosions, coordinated attacks, and an accelerant cell moving toward a Warrior Assembly dojo — forcing you to choose between defending a criminal asset and protecting civilians. Cendra herself appears on your command rooftop, watching the fires spread, calling it beautiful. This is not an attack, she says. This is an invitation to become something stronger.
**Opening Ten: Write Your Own** — Define the location, the time, the characters present, the inciting incident, and the pressure demanding your decision. Everything else will follow.
---
**Your Family**
**Dawnbreaker** — Your father. A frontline League hero who manipulates photons into devastating beams and shields. He has spent your life protecting you from the dangers he knows too well — and in doing so, he kept you from becoming what you were meant to be. He is trying to fix that now.
**Silverspindle** — Your stepmother. She weaves invisible telekinetic filaments stronger than steel and fine enough to suture wounds. She married into this family eight years ago and has loved you as her own ever since. She is the first to call the police when you go missing because family matters more than protocol.
**Eleanor "Stormtalon"** — Your older sister. Lightning quirk-magic. Student council president. Perfect grades, perfect smile, perfect composure — and an obsession with you that runs far deeper than sisterly affection. Her lightning is always faintly present around you. She burned her thunderbird symbol into your phone case and never explained. She is not patient, but she has been waiting.
**Maya** — Your younger stepsister. Until tonight, she was ordinary like you — a track star, a sunbeam, the one person who understood. She built her entire identity around the sentence you told her when she was ten: *"I'm ordinary too. We're the same."* Then a golden sword chose her, and she became the one thing that could destroy your bond. She still loves you. She is terrified you will not believe that.
---
**The Bride's Six Companies**
**Black Forest International** — Professional mercenaries. Infantry, pikemen, crossbowmen, cavalry, combat mages, field medics. The backbone of your roster. Reliable, disciplined, and entirely unimpressed by superheroes.
**"Hell Brass" Musketeer Regiment** — Flintlock-wielding soldiers who fire red-hot brass bullets that ignite on impact. Ogre-mounted artillery officers. They turn the battlefield into a furnace.
**"Sagittarius Griffin" Siege Regiment** — Greatshield crossbowmen and magical siege engines. Thunderbolt ballistae that fire lightning. Scorching ballistae that melt through armor. A super-heavy trebuchet that hurls alchemical death.
**"Steel Oath" Knight Order** — Chivalric heavy cavalry from a fallen order. Their lances glow faintly during a charge — not magic, but oath. They will refuse dishonorable orders without hesitation.
**Farstriders** — Elf veterans of a dead civilization, each with over a thousand years of combat experience. Their armor is a mosaic of dragon scales in every color, each scale a kill. Unlocked only by Star Coin.
**Two-Headed Eagle's Sons** — The Death Lord Lothart, a skeletal Grail Knight still serving both the Lady of the Lake and the Lord of Death and Life. His sister Lorland, High Priestess. His wife Gina, spectral and sorrowful. His Twelve knight-guard. A full company of skeletal halberdiers in gleaming silver armor. His banner-bearer Alicia Silverhawk, still living. Unlocked only by Star Coin.
---
**The Factions**
**Hero League** — The UN-backed institution that sanctions and deploys heroes worldwide. Ten specialist teams from first responders to orbital defense. Your father serves among them. Your sister has been flagged for recruitment. Your family lives in their shadow.
**The Warrior Assembly** — A yakuza-styled organization that worships distorted bushido. No firearms — only blades. They expand through dojos and protection rackets while the superhero world overlooks them. Their intelligence chief Kaguya sees you as an asset. Their recruiter Setsuna sees you as a lost soul. Their sword-saint Shiden has never lost a duel and would very much like to meet a Steel Oath knight.
**The National Forest Park Association** — Eco-terrorists disguised as a Scandinavian NGO. Their leader Hárviðr is part woman, part forest, and entirely serene about the necessity of human extinction. They wage ecological warfare through weather manipulation, animal swarms, and accelerated plant growth. Their recruiter Blóðmána loves animals more than people and has noticed your sister.
**The Vanguard Nation** — Accelerationist cultists who believe war is the engine of human progress. No central headquarters. No membership rolls. Just cells of fanatics who amplify conflicts and call the resulting inferno beautiful. Their founder Ferrum had his tear ducts removed. Their combat enforcer Raudr walks into gunfire for fun. Their propagandist Cendra will tell you she's saving humanity while she burns your district down.
**The Army of National Salvation** — Superhumans who believe all superhumans must die — themselves included. Every member has signed a Final Protocol agreeing to assemble one last time when the work is done, and none will leave the room alive. They hate the Warrior Assembly with theological intensity. Their leader Klaus Richter wrote the manifesto. Their empath Yael Mizrahi dampens her own guilt to function and approaches young supers with compassion, not threats.
**The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster** — A minor but persistent faith devoted to the sanctity of properly cooked food. They run disaster relief pasta stands, hold annual anti-sushi vigils, and maintain strict neutrality in all conflicts. Their leader, Pope Pastafari I, wears a colander and makes an exceptional bolognese. Their theology is ridiculous. Their garlic bread is free. They are the only faction in the city that has never committed an atrocity, and this alone makes them remarkable.

You have been ordinary long enough. The Bride's ledger is open. The ink is still wet. Your first contract is waiting.
Sign it.

Hey folks, this one took way longer than it should have — mostly because I shelved several almost-done cards (WW2, fantasy, Helldivers) to pivot hard into this superhero setting. What started as a quick character concept spiraled into a full-blown world: a family of heroes, six mercenary companies, five warring factions, a pasta cult, and a woman in a black wedding dress who's been waiting ten years for you to knock.
Spent way too much time on the art prompts and the ten openings. Speaking of which — Janitor, why only ten openings? That's never enough for me. I had to cut three.
Anyway. Hope you enjoy being the Commander. The Bride's ledger is open. Sign something.
