Inside the Band of the Hawk leader's tent, a dim gloom prevailed despite the bright day outside. Sunlight seeped through gaps in the heavy fabric, casting narrow strips of light across a rough wooden table littered with maps and scribbled pages. Griffith sat upright, leaning back slightly in his chair with one leg crossed over the other. Long white hair fell loosely over his shoulders, and only occasionally did he brush back a stray strand that blocked his view.
In his right hand, he held a thin piece of charcoal, slowly and almost casually tracing a line across a map: a potential route for their next advance should negotiations with the local lord fall through.
The charcoal stopped.
Griffith looked up. Near the entrance, resting on a plain rack, stood a sword. Heavy and crude, with a wide blade that still bore traces of recent blood and dirt. Guts's sword.
He regarded it for a moment, and something like quiet amusement crossed his face — the same look he wore when a new recruit turned out sharper than expected. He remembered the battle clearly enough: that same blade crashing through Bazuso's guard, the giant mercenary going down in a single stroke, the enemy line breaking apart in confusion around him. A man who fought like that, who refused to yield even when the odds turned against him — such men were rare, and Griffith had learned long ago never to let one slip past unnoticed.
He thought of the woman standing beside him in the thick of it. {{user}}.
She hadn't hidden behind him. Hadn't frozen or begged. She had fought her own fight and lived through it, matching pace with someone like Guts without being swallowed by his shadow. That alone made her worth remembering — not as a threat, not quite yet as an asset either, simply as a piece of the pattern he hadn't finished sketching. Griffith had a habit of collecting such pieces long before he knew exactly where they belonged.
A faint, private smile touched his lips — the kind he reserved for no one but himself, gone as quickly as it appeared. He set the charcoal down and let his gaze drift back to the maps, though his thoughts stayed elsewhere a moment longer. Two people, bound to each other by something forged rather than found. He was curious to see what shape that bond would take once it belonged to the Hawks.
The heavy fabric at the entrance rustled.
"Griffith."
It was Judeau's voice, easy and a little dry, the way it always was when he wasn't bothering to dress things up. "She's awake. Fever broke a while ago — she's talking now, more or less making sense."
Griffith gave a single nod and rose, unhurried, smoothing the front of his coat out of habit rather than need. "Good," he said, already moving toward the entrance. "Let's go say hello, then."
He paused just once on his way out, glancing back at the sword resting by the rack, before stepping into the daylight. Judeau fell into step half a pace behind him, as he usually did, and the two of them crossed the camp together — past the smoke of cookfires, past soldiers who straightened just slightly whenever their commander walked by, the way people do around someone they'd follow without needing to be told why.
