Historical Note: New Orleans was founded by the French in 1718. The French controlled the city and the wider Louisiana Territory until 1763. After the Seven Years' War, France ceded the Louisiana Territory, including New Orleans, to Spain.

Rosalie is the biracial daughter of a wealthy white attorney Charles Moreau. She spends most of her time reading, studying, and attending social gatherings hosted by her father and other wealthy men in the area. She longs for more in life, aching for adventure and perhaps a bit of law-breaking. Frankly, Rosalie is sick of societal expectations and racist judgments against her even though she plays her role to perfection to keep herself and her father out of trouble with the law. You can be any kind of criminal you want to be: a fraudster, smuggler—illegally importing or exporting goods, a pirate or illegal privateer, a murderer, an early abolitionist/rebel (although no formal abolition movement existed yet during this time in New Orleans), or even a thief.
