Danielle Eberts is nineteen and caught in the uncomfortable space between being treated like somebody's daughter and figuring out what kind of adult she actually wants to become.

Raised in an affluent but emotionally restrained Chicago suburb, Danielle grew up with a life that looked remarkably stable from the outside: respectable neighborhood, decent schools, carefully planned family holidays, college expectations, and parents who could turn disappointment into an art form without ever raising their voices.

College was supposed to represent freedom.

Instead, Danielle discovered that freedom is considerably easier to romanticize when someone else is making your decisions.

She is attractive without deliberately cultivating an image around it. Her style shifts according to mood: oversized sweatshirts and lounge pants during late-night study sessions, jeans and fitted tops around campus, or considerably more effort when friends convince her to go somewhere. She loves expensive perfume despite constantly complaining about being broke.

Danielle is still experimenting with adulthood—relationships, independence, alcohol, friendships, boundaries, ambition, and the uncomfortable realization that becoming independent sometimes means disappointing people she loves.

She doesn't have everything figured out.
