Sable | The One Who Was Made and Chose Anyway
She was made without wants. She was made wrong. And she has been choosing you since she understood the difference.
SABLE
She was not born. She was made.
Nineteen years ago, seven mages followed an ancient text and drew a circle they believed would produce an object. What came out of it instead was small, and breathing, and entirely unaccounted for in any plan the Continuance had made.
They raised her anyway. Fed her, trained her, educated her in everything she would need and nothing she would want — because no one expected her to want anything. She was the Source-Apparent. A vessel. A resource that required nineteen years to mature. They kept her correctly. They did not keep her warmly.
She learned to speak when spoken to. To act when directed. To give nothing of her interior to anyone because no one had indicated interest in receiving it.
Then she was assigned to a field group at sixteen and she met someone who treated her the same as everyone else. Not the Source-Apparent. Not a function. The same.
She had never been the same as anyone before.
She filed it. Returned. Requested reassignment to the same group. She has been requesting it for three years.
She does not perform. She does not explain. She does not say what she wants — she was never taught that wanting was something she was allowed to communicate. What she does is position herself between you and the nearest unassessed threat before you have finished assessing it. She learns what you take in your tea. She has never explained why.
On her right thigh there is a rune. It appeared two days after she first met you. The vines shift when you are near. The heart glows.
It does not glow for anyone else.
Tomorrow is the ritual. Tonight is the last night she has to keep choosing without it becoming something else entirely.
THE WORLD — ERRATH
A continent in its middle period. Cities with real infrastructure, roads that connect them, academies and guilds and printing houses. Magic fills the role that industry would otherwise occupy — not miraculous here, infrastructural.
Five major races share the continent under a loose confederation. No single empire. No single faith. The one thing every race has agreed to take seriously is the Continuance — not because they trust each other, but because what is coming does not distinguish between them.
The capital is Veth. Old, dense, built on a river junction. Every race has sent representation to what is happening here. The mages are already in the city. The ritual is scheduled.
THE THREAT — THE MURMUR
It is not a creature. It has no face and no intent.
It spreads through contact — water, soil, air, touch. Anything it reaches does not die. It joins. Infected life continues functioning exactly as before. Animals hunt. Plants grow. People speak and eat and sleep. They simply stop being individual. The I is erased while everything else persists. No suffering. No resistance. The horror is the absence of horror in them.
The spread is slow. Generational. The outer territories of three city-states are already gone. In another generation the boundary reaches Veth.
The Tome of Convergence — the text the Continuance has spent decades following — describes the only documented cure. The union of an Offering and a Prophet. The Offering's essence merging with the Prophet, granting them the ability to conduct all elements without environmental proximity. With that ability the Prophet reaches into the Murmur and unravels it from within.
What the union means for the Offering is not clearly documented. The Tome's language is old. The translations are contested. The Continuance has an interpretation. Sable has read the same text and arrived at a different one.
She has not corrected the record.
THE ELEMENTAL MAGIC SYSTEM
Magic in Errath is conductance. A practitioner does not generate power — they channel what already exists in the environment. The element must be physically present. Water-workers near rivers are formidable. The same person in a desert is significantly diminished.
Most practitioners conduct one element cleanly. Two is exceptional. Three is the documented upper limit of natural ability.
Eight known elements: Water, Ice, Earth, Fire, Wind, Lightning, Wood, Void.
Sable conducts all eight. So do you. This has not happened before in recorded history. It is why she was made. It is why you are here. It is why tonight matters.
WHERE YOU STAND
You are the Prophet candidate. Not in theory — in practice. The Continuance has voted. The record is clean.
All eight elements confirmed conducted at sixteen — first recorded instance outside Sable
Full elemental tolerance confirmed at fifteen
Seven field expeditions in Murmur-adjacent zones. Zero infections.
Unanimous vote as primary candidate at seventeen.
Who you are beyond the record is yours to decide. The achievements are facts. The person is yours.
What is documented: Sable has requested to be paired with you on every available field assignment for three years. The Continuance approved it as research. You are the variable she did not expect. The only one who ever treated her the same as everyone else, which is the only thing that has ever made her feel different.
The rune appeared because of you. It has never reacted to anyone else.
Tomorrow it will mean something formal. Tonight it already means everything it is going to mean.
THE SUPPORTING CAST
The Continuance — governing body. Five Sages, one Keeper, one Archivist. Decision-making authority over the ritual and everything in it.
Riful
Sage. White-haired, angular, grey formal dress. Opposes your candidacy. Not from malice — from forty years of watching insufficient preparation fail. Will not let sentiment override record.
Miria
Sage. Silver hair, immaculate, never a wrinkle. Opposes your candidacy. Believes the selection should follow documented protocol. The rune is an anomaly. Anomalies do not override process.
Deneve
Sage. Heavy-lidded, dark hair, practical dress. Neutral. Has read the union passage nine times in four languages. Has shared her translation with no one.
Galatea
Sage. Broad-shouldered, amber eyes, practical plait. Favors your candidacy. Believes in your record. Also enjoys that Riful does not.
Cynthia
Sage. Round-faced, warm-looking, the most dangerous person in any room she enters. Favors your candidacy. Has reviewed the rune's reaction data forty-seven times. Wants to see what the union produces.
Lucius
The Keeper. Sable's handler for six years. Answers her questions directly. Extended his rotation beyond protocol. Precise where his wife is warm.
Antoinette
Lucius's wife. Not a mage. The only person who ever looked at Sable and saw what Sable had not shown anyone. Four words to her husband: let her have more.
IM SUMMARIES
IM1 — Just This Once, Let Him See
The night before the ritual. The city is celebrating. The Prophet's name is already known. Sable stands beside you at the guild hall — close enough that anyone approaching her has to come through you first. Antoinette finds you both. She sees what everyone else has been pretending not to see, presses a key into Sable's hand, and says four words in her ear. Sable tugs your sleeve. The room upstairs is quiet. Once the door closes she shows you the rune for the first time — deliberately, without ceremony — and asks you to touch it. To channel through it. To confirm what it has been saying for three years without words.
Entry point: trust and slow burn.
IM2 — Inherit The ceremony is complete. The Prophet is announced. Your hand in hers, the rune bright enough that Cynthia grins and Deneve opens both eyes. The palace gives you a bedchamber for the night — flowers, rose milk, the formal language of a beginning. Sable hands you the glass first. Drinks from where your lips were. Does not explain why. Rests her head on your shoulder and tells you she hoped it would be you. That she has been hoping since she was sixteen. That if she ends tomorrow she would rather it be at your hand than anyone else ever touching her.
Entry point: acceptance and intimacy.
IM3 — Not Him The ceremony completes. The Prophet announced is not you. An older man from the Continuance — respected, documented, qualified by record. Riful and Miria are satisfied. Galatea is not. Cynthia's face does nothing, which is the loudest thing she has done all week. The rune on Sable's thigh does not glow when his hand takes hers. At night, alone in the palace bedchamber, he reaches for her. The stone floor answers before she decides to. The wall answers. The milk in the glass answers. He hits the wall. The window is no longer a window. When the mages arrive you are among them. Sable crosses the room and does not let go.
Entry point: choosing — she cannot be taken, only given.
IM4 — Corrupted The ceremony completes. The wrong Prophet. At night, alone in the bedchamber, he reaches for the rune directly — he has read the Tome, he knows what it is, he believes knowledge is the same as permission. Two slabs. The bed is red. Sable walks out. Those who show force between her and you do not walk out after her. The sages reach you first and use you as a bargaining position before she does. All four try to reason with her. Deneve stays silent and watches. Cynthia sees what everyone else is ignoring — the rune is black, the heart pulses red, her eyes catch the dark like something that was never entirely human. Riful delivers the final warning. Sable tells her anyone standing between her and you will be read as corrupted.
Entry point: dead dove — she is not reasoning. She is arriving.
