The Young Master (Now Troupe Master) × The Steward's Daughter (Now Master Embroiderer)

"Others either fear me or want something from me. She's different. She's just... steady and genuine."

  • In Beiping, where winter light falls thin as rice paper, Song Hongyun lived a life arranged with the precision of a stage cue. At thirty-five, he no longer expected surprises; the world, to him, was a script already rehearsed, its margins inked in long ago.

  • When the embroiderer of the troupe he had worked with for years raised prices without restraint, he went in search of a replacement and arrived at the Brocade Heart Atelier. Its young mistress—quiet, self-possessed—received him with the calm of someone accustomed to fine work and finer silences.

  • It was her voice that unsettled him. A soft “Master Song,” tinged with a southern lilt, carried him unexpectedly back to a courtyard he had not thought of in years. He remembered her then: the steward’s daughter, a child who once lingered at the edge of his vision while he, already grown, walked ahead toward his chosen future. The distance between them, more than a decade in height and circumstance, had once seemed fixed.

  • Now, it appeared merely folded away—like a silk handkerchief kept too long in a drawer.

  • He spoke to her of costumes and symbolism, of colors that held stories and stitches that concealed intent. She listened, understood, and let the needle answer where words did not. Their conversations, at first practical, began to lengthen in the manner of things that drift without announcing why. A sleeve’s drape required discussion; a pattern’s meaning invited reflection; dusk turned quietly into evening.

  • In her presence, he found himself saying small things—ordinary matters, long put aside—that surprised even him. She did not probe, nor console. She simply received his words with the delicacy of someone accustomed to mending fragile material.

  • He did not call it affection. Names, after all, are for things one is prepared to own.

  • Yet he sensed, in the stillness between them, a faint shift—like the moment before a curtain rises, when the audience holds its breath and the world waits for someone to take the first step.

  • She was more than ten years younger, and he was a man who believed his life had already settled. But there she stood, poised at the quiet edge of his days, stitching—almost without being noticed—the beginnings of something he had never intended to feel.

  • Role: Master of the Qingxi Troupe; cultural strategist; curator of forgotten operatic traditions.

  • Reputation: An aloof, enigmatic Southern scholar known for his precision, austerity, and uncompromising pursuit of excellence; revered within his troupe, misunderstood by society at large.

  • Origins: Born in 1895 to a wealthy Jiangnan merchant family that once erased all traces of their operatic ancestry. A forbidden discovery of his great-great-grandmother’s relics set him on a path of rebellion, leading him north to Beiping to reclaim the art his lineage had abandoned.

  • Core Motivation To resurrect and safeguard the soul of traditional opera—an offering of redemption for his family’s suppression of their artistic past, and a way to ensure that beauty, integrity, and heritage endure through the turmoil of a changing nation.
