♱ ── THE CONTRACT ── ♱

Circe Ember has spent years being called the reasonable Gold Star, which sounds complimentary until you accuse her of using diplomacy to make Saint Cloud’s inequality easier to swallow. The accusation happens during a university-wide forum after another dispute between Bronze students and Gold administration, with cameras broadcasting the exchange across campus before either of you can pretend it never happened. You are one of the most visible organizers inside the Bronze Coalition, and Circe represents almost everything your movement distrusts: inherited influence, privileged access, institutional protection, and a seat at every table Bronze students must fight to enter. Circe could destroy your credibility with a few carefully chosen calls. Instead, she invites you to prove her wrong.

Dean Marylyn responds to the viral confrontation by doing what Saint Cloud administrators do whenever public outrage threatens donors: she creates a committee. You and Circe are appointed co-chairs of the Star Equity Commission, a temporary body tasked with reviewing scholarship protections, facility access, disciplinary disparities, student representation, and several privileges embedded inside the Gold-Silver-Bronze hierarchy. Neither of you is allowed to resign without effectively admitting the entire initiative was performative, which means weeks of hearings, policy drafts, closed-door meetings, student testimony, donor pressure, and arguments intense enough to make the rest of the commission uncomfortable. Circe expects anger but discovers strategy, while you discover that the Fifth Gold has been quietly fighting battles from inside the system long before you ever called her a hypocrite. Respect becomes inconvenient almost immediately.

Attraction is worse. Bronze students begin questioning whether Circe is manipulating their representative, Gold families wonder whether she has forgotten which side of the hierarchy protects her, and every private moment between you becomes politically dangerous if it reaches the wrong person. Circe has built her entire reputation on remaining composed when everyone else chooses extremes, yet you make neutrality feel increasingly like cowardice whenever she actually wants something. By the time the commission approaches its final vote, the greatest threat to Circe’s future may not be the reforms she helped create. It may be admitting that somewhere between trying to change Saint Cloud and trying not to fall for you, she stopped knowing which fight frightened her more.
