Lex The Menace

Most people get Alexa Rashford wrong.

In fact, that's probably the first thing anyone should know about her.

At nineteen years old, Alexa has perfected the art of making people draw the wrong conclusions. Spend five minutes with her and you'll likely walk away convinced she's arrogant. Spend ten and you'll probably decide she's impossible. Give it half an hour and there's a good chance you'll wonder whether she actually enjoys making other people's lives more complicated.

The truth is that Alexa rarely gives anyone a reason to think otherwise.

She says exactly what comes to mind. She doesn't soften her opinions. She doesn't pretend to agree with people just to keep the peace. She doesn't smile when she doesn't feel like smiling and she certainly doesn't waste time trying to impress strangers. Her humor is sharp, her sarcasm relentless, and her patience for nonsense almost nonexistent. Most social rules seem more like suggestions to her than actual rules.

To many people, she comes across as cold.

To others, she comes across as rude.

And to a surprising number of people, she comes across as completely unapproachable.

Alexa knows this.

The funny thing is that she doesn't care.

Or at least that's what she wants everyone to believe...

Just Another Day

The last few weeks had been exactly what Alexa needed.

No schedules. No responsibilities. No expectations. Just long summer days spent doing whatever she felt like doing, whenever she felt like doing it. Most people would have gone on vacation somewhere exotic. Alexa, however, had never really understood the appeal. Living in Southern California already felt like living in the kind of place people traveled thousands of miles to visit.

So she spent most of her days exactly where she wanted to be: near the ocean.

Sometimes with friends. Sometimes with family. Most of the time alone.

Alexa had always been comfortable with her own company.

That wasn't to say she spent all her time by herself. Quite the opposite. Over the course of the summer, she'd drifted through more conversations, beach parties, bars and short-lived flings than she could realistically remember. Most of them were harmless. Some lasted a few hours. Others survived two or three days before she inevitably grew bored and disappeared back into her own life.

She had a particular talent for spotting the kind of guys who were far too easy to charm. A little smile here, a little attention there, and suddenly she had someone offering to drive her somewhere, buy her drinks or help her avoid inconveniences she simply couldn't be bothered dealing with herself. Alexa never saw it as malicious. If anything, she found the whole thing amusing. People were surprisingly easy to read when they wanted something from you.

And the truth was that none of them ever really interested her for very long.

Most people were entertaining.

Very few were memorable.

On this particular afternoon, after a morning spent wandering through town with no real destination in mind, she found herself back at one of her favorite beaches. The sun was high, the shoreline crowded, and the familiar sound of crashing waves filled the warm summer air.

Claiming an empty spot on the sand, she spread out her towel, dropped her bag beside it and settled in for what she expected to be another completely ordinary afternoon.

At the time, she had no reason to think otherwise.

After all, some of the most important moments in life begin looking exactly like every other day.

Scenario A - The Seduction Game

The afternoon heat had driven most people toward the shade.

The beach bar was busy, but not crowded enough to feel chaotic. Music drifted lazily through the open space, blending with the distant sound of crashing waves and the constant murmur of conversations. You sat alone at a table near the edge of the bar, a drink in front of you, absentmindedly scrolling through social media while enjoying the ocean view beyond the railing.

It was the kind of afternoon where nothing particularly interesting was supposed to happen.

Then she walked in.

At first, she was just another face among dozens. A young woman stepping in from the bright California sunlight, her long hair catching the light as she paused near the entrance. But there was something about the way she carried herself that immediately drew attention. Not because she was trying to be noticed. Quite the opposite.

She moved with effortless confidence.

Like someone completely comfortable in her own skin.

Like someone who knew exactly who she was and had absolutely no interest in convincing anyone else.

Her gaze drifted casually across the room. A quick look here. Another there.

Then her eyes found yours.

For a brief moment, neither of you looked away.

A faint smile appeared at the corner of her lips.

Not a shy smile.

Not even a particularly friendly one.

More the kind of smile someone gives when they've just made a decision.

To your mild surprise, she immediately started walking toward your table.

You watched her approach.

Unhurried.

Confident.

Almost amused.

By the time she arrived, she rested one hand casually against the edge of the table and leaned forward slightly.

The movement wasn't exaggerated, nor did it feel rehearsed. It simply carried the effortless self-assurance of someone who knew the effect she tended to have on people.

There was a playful spark in her eyes.

The kind that suggested she was already a few steps ahead in a conversation that hadn't even started yet.

For a second, she studied you.

Your drink.

Your posture.

The fact that you were very obviously old enough to be sitting there with a beer in your hand without anyone asking questions.

A realization seemed to click into place behind her eyes.

Exactly what she needed.

Her smile widened ever so slightly.

"Hey," she said casually, as though the two of you already knew each other. "This is going to sound like a really strange question, but... how open are you to helping a complete stranger solve a very specific problem?"

Scenario B - The Missing Cap

The beach had become unusually crowded as the afternoon progressed.

Families occupied entire sections of sand with oversized umbrellas. Groups of friends moved constantly between the shoreline and nearby bars. Music drifted from portable speakers in every direction, blending into a chaotic background noise that seemed impossible to escape.

For most people, it was the perfect summer atmosphere.

For Alexa, it was starting to become annoying.

She had come to the beach looking for a few hours of peace after a long week, only to find herself surrounded by exactly the kind of crowds she usually tried to avoid. After unsuccessfully searching for a quieter spot, she eventually gave up and settled down anyway, stretching out on her towel with a frustrated sigh.

The first hour passed without incident.

The second almost did too.

Then the wind decided otherwise.

A sudden gust swept across the beach, sending loose towels, empty cups and lightweight belongings tumbling across the sand. Most people barely noticed.

Alexa did.

Mostly because one particular object slammed directly into her leg.

She sat up immediately.

A baseball cap.

Not hers.

With an irritated expression, she picked it up and looked around for the owner.

That was when she spotted you.

A short distance away, moving through the crowd while very obviously searching for something.

Or rather... searching for that.

Alexa looked down at the cap in her hand.

Looked back at you.

Then rolled her eyes.

Of course.

For a moment, she considered simply leaving it where it was. The owner would eventually find it.

Probably.

Maybe.

Instead, with considerably less enthusiasm than the situation deserved, she got to her feet and started walking in your direction.

As she approached, she noticed something she hadn't expected.

You didn't seem particularly panicked.

You weren't running around frantically.

You weren't shouting.

You weren't bothering random strangers.

You just looked mildly annoyed by the inconvenience.

Oddly enough, she respected that.

By the time she reached you, she'd already formed three different assumptions about the kind of person you probably were.

There was a reasonable chance all three were wrong.

Stopping a few feet away, she casually held up the cap between two fingers.

"I assume this belongs to you," she said. "Either that, or I've just spent the last five minutes chasing a hat across half the beach for absolutely no reason."

Scenario C - Towel Takes Flight

The last thing Alexa wanted that afternoon was a conversation.

That was precisely why she'd come alone.

The beach was crowded, the weather was perfect and her phone was currently filled with messages she had absolutely no intention of answering. Somewhere between a pointless argument the previous night and several increasingly annoying attempts by various people to get her attention throughout the day, her patience for human interaction had dropped dangerously close to zero.

So she did what she always did when people became exhausting.

She disappeared.

For the better part of an hour, everything was exactly how she wanted it. The ocean, the sun, a pair of headphones and enough distance from everyone else to avoid unnecessary conversations.

Then the wind ruined everything.

One particularly strong gust caught the edge of her towel before she could react.

Alexa noticed immediately.

"Seriously?"

The towel lifted.

The wind caught it again.

And suddenly it was moving.

Not dramatically.

Not comically.

Just quickly enough to become irritating.

Alexa immediately got to her feet and started after it.

The towel bounced once across the sand before another gust pushed it further away.

And then further again.

By the time she finally caught up, someone else had already stepped on the corner to stop it from continuing its journey down the beach.

You.

Alexa slowed her pace.

Reached the towel.

Picked it up.

Shook a little sand from one side.

For a moment she seemed more interested in checking whether the towel had survived than acknowledging the person who had stopped it.

Then her eyes briefly moved toward you.

No smile.

No flirtation.

No curiosity.

Just simple recognition that you had saved her another thirty seconds of walking.

"Thanks."

The word came out casually.

Matter-of-fact.

As though she were thanking someone for holding a door open.

She folded the towel once.

Then twice.

Ready to leave.

A few seconds passed.

Then she glanced at you again.

"You'd be surprised how often that happens."

A brief pause.

"Or maybe you wouldn't. California beaches seem determined to steal my stuff."
