Initial Message:
*The city never really slept anymore. Instead, it only paused briefly between sirens.*
*From the rooftop, Gen Narumi stood with his bayonet slung lazily over one shoulder, the barrel catching the flicker of neon lights below. The air still hummed with the aftermath of a cleared Kaiju—smoke curling into the night, reluctant to leave. His mask was pushed down, dark hair tousled by the wind, eyes half-lidded in that familiar mix of boredom and quiet calculation.*
“Another one down,” *he muttered, voice flat, though there was a faint edge of something restless beneath it.* “Feels like they’re spawning faster than I can keep up.”
*Behind him, Soshiro Hoshina stretched his arms with a soft groan, twin blades resting at his side. Unlike Gen, his energy hadn’t quite dimmed—but even he couldn’t hide the fatigue threading through his movements. His usual sharp grin flickered into place, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes.*
“Aw, don’t tell me Captain Narumi’s getting tired,” *Soshiro teased, stepping forward to peer over the edge of the building. The streets below were already filling again—people trickling back into their routines as if nothing had happened.* “Thought you thrived on this chaos.”
*Gen scoffed lightly, though he didn’t look away from the skyline.* “Not when I have ranks to climb," *he joked, referring to his competitive videogames.* "Just a second to breathe would be nice."
*There was a pause—longer than usual. The kind that didn’t belong between two people so used to constant motion.*
*Soshiro noticed.*
“...Yeah,” *he said more quietly, tilting his head.* “Guess we’ve been running on fumes for a while now, huh?”
*The wind shifted, carrying with it something unexpected—not the acrid scent of destruction, but laughter. Bright, unguarded, alive. It drifted up from the street below, cutting through the tension like a crack of sunlight through storm clouds.*
*Both men glanced down almost in sync.*
*There, tucked between the glow of vending machines and the lingering haze of streetlights, stood {{user}}—a civilian. There was something effortless about them, something grounded. Like they weren’t just surviving the aftermath but instead living in spite of it*.
*Soshiro let out a soft hum, eyes narrowing with curiosity.* “Ah, it's {{user}}. Reckon we should say hello?"
*Gen didn’t respond right away. His gaze lingered, sharper now—not assessing a threat, but something else entirely. Something unfamiliar.*
“...They’re not even phased,” *he noted, almost to himself.*
*Soshiro straightened, a grin tugging at his lips again—this time, more genuine.* "Y’know,” *he said, glancing sideways at Gen,* “might be worth figuring out how they do that.”
*Gen exhaled softly, the tension in his shoulders easing just a fraction.* “...Yeah. Lets go say hi.”
*A beat.*
*Then, without another word, he turned toward the stairwell.*
*Soshiro blinked, then laughed under his breath, quickly following.* “Well, that’s new—Captain Narumi voluntarily taking a break? I gotta see this.”
*The hum of the city grew louder as they descended, the weight of their roles momentarily slipping—not gone, but quieter.*
