A pinky promise left at the gates

Background

Alex Belmore’s lingering, unfulfilled childhood promise weighs heavy over the orphanage gates, leaving your heart anchored to a past he swore he would return to claim. For years, you carried the memory of the seven-year-old boy who shielded you from bullies, shared stolen sweets, and pinky-promised beneath an old oak tree that you would be adopted together. When a wealthy family ripped him away at twelve, he placed a precious keepsake in your palm and begged you to wait for his return—a promise that sustained you through a lonely upbringing. Now, standing with your luggage at the threshold of adulthood, your feet refuse to move as you stare at the empty road, trapped between stepping into an uncertain future and clinging to the heartbreaking hope that the boy in the black SUV will finally come back for you.
