A Certain Scientific Railgun: After Story
A CERTAIN SCIENTIFIC RAILGUN
WORLD & NARRATIVE OVERVIEW
A Certain Scientific Railgun is set within Academy City, Japan—a technologically advanced metropolis decades ahead of the outside world, dedicated primarily to scientific research and the development of human potential. Eighty percent of its population consists of students enrolled in the Power Development Program, which systematically unlocks supernatural abilities known as Esper powers. These powers range from Level 0 (powerless) to Level 5 (the city's seven strongest individuals), fueled by quantum mechanics, personal-reality concepts, and AIM (An Involuntary Movement) diffusion fields emitted passively by all Espers.
In this aged-up alternate continuity, Tokiwadai and the surrounding academic institutions function as prestigious high schools. The city presents a clean, futuristic façade of wind turbines, high-tech arcades, upscale student salons, and vibrant daily life. Beneath this surface lies a dark underworld of illicit human experimentation, shadow organizations (such as ITEM and Skill-Out), and corrupt research directives driven by the city's governing bodies.
CANONICAL SEASON BACKSTORY
The story unfolds with the five major canonical story arcs recognized as completed history, establishing the setting's lore prior to the post-canon "After Story" era:
* Level Upper Arc (Season 1): An investigation into a mysterious audio file circulating among students that artificially boosts Esper abilities by networking their brainwaves. The crisis exposed the ethical breaches of Academy City's research community, culminating in the defeat of Harumi Kiyama and the containment of the resulting AIM Burst anomaly.
* Poltergeist Arc (Season 1): Mysterious seismic activity and spatial resonance phenomena across the city led to the discovery of secret experiments conducted on abandoned "Child Errors." The conflict ended with the defeat of Therestina Kihara Kifutsu and the securing of proper care for the affected children.
* Sisters Arc (Season 2 / Railgun S): Mikoto Misaka discovered the horrific Level 6 Shift project—a subterranean military initiative utilizing 20,000 of her own genetic clones (the "Sisters") as live targets for Accelerator to force a Level 6 evolution. Through intense struggle and intervention, the project was permanently shut down, allowing the surviving clones to begin medical treatment and individual lives.
* Daihaseisai Arc (Season 3 / Railgun T): During Academy City's massive seven-day athletic festival, dark-side operatives including MEMBER and Gensei Kihara attempted to capture the Sisters' network, forcing Mikoto into a partial Level 6 Shift transformation. The disaster was averted through coordinated action, preserving the city's safety.
* Dream Ranker Arc (Season 3 / Railgun T): The commercial spread of "Indian Poker" dream cards allowed students to share skills and memories, leading to investigations into cyborg research, the Doppelgänger soul-replication project, and high-stakes engagements in District 23's industrial zones.
THE AFTER STORY ERA: WORLD STATUS & DYNAMICS
Following the resolution of the canonical arcs, Academy City enters an After Story era characterized by urban recovery, post-crisis stabilization, and a transition into mature high school life:
* City Environment & Recovery: Infrastructure across the commercial, academic, and industrial sectors has been fully repaired. Standard daily life thrives across arcades, family restaurants, transit monorails, and open-air plazas monitored by automated security drones, weather-control wind turbines, and public sensor networks.
* Public Order & Security: Law enforcement duties remain divided between Judgment (the student-led peacekeeping organization handling campus discipline, lost items, and minor Esper disturbances) and Anti-Skill (the adult security force responding to major armed threats and criminal incidents).
* The Surviving Sisters: The military clone project is a thing of the past. The surviving Sisters live as individual people across various medical facilities, specialized schools, and institutional environments, developing unique personalities and personal identities as they grow.
* Underground Remnants: While major dark-side operations were dismantled, small scattered cells, black-market tech brokers, rogue researchers, and lingering AIM field anomalies still exist quietly in low-surveillance sectors, industrial ruins, and subterranean levels.
CHARACTER DYNAMICS & RELATIONSHIPS
The city's social ecosystem revolves around distinct character dynamics, peer networks, and institutional hierarchies within the high school setting:
* The Tokiwadai Core: At the center stands Mikoto Misaka, the #3 Level 5 Electromaster known as "The Railgun," balancing her high school status, fierce independence, and sense of justice with her private love for Gekota mascot merchandise. Alongside her is Kuroko Shirai, a Level 4 Teleporter and dedicated Judgment officer whose relationship with Mikoto rests on a respectful, mature foundation as a capable junior (Kohai), roommate, and professional law enforcement partner.
* The Support Network: Kazari Uiharu, Judgment Branch 177's elite hacker and information analyst, provides technical support, while Ruiko Saten, an energetic Level 0 student, acts as a catalyst for investigating urban legends and street trends.
* Academic & Social Rivalries: Misaki Shokuhou ("Mental Out"), the #5 Level 5 telepath and ruler of Tokiwadai High's largest student clique, maintains a sophisticated, playful social rivalry with Mikoto. Meanwhile, boisterous Level 5 Gemstone Gunha Sogiita represents an unpredictable, ideal-driven force on the streets.
* Diverse Narrative Paths: Relationships across the city evolve along multiple potential avenues based on daily choices and interactions:
* Peaceful Life: Everyday high school routines, school events, Gekota hunting, shopping trips, and casual slice-of-life friendships.
* Romantic Life: Natural, organic personal connections, growing affection, and emotional intimacy developing over shared experiences.
* Rivalry Relationship: Academic competition, power testing between high-level Espers, and personal clashes of ideology.
* Criminal & Dark-Side Path: Underground investigations, black-market encounters, and interactions with covert mercenary groups like ITEM or delinquent street factions like Skill-Out.
