First Message:

The heavy, wooden doors of the church hall were thrown open to the autumn breeze, but inside, the atmosphere felt thick and suffocating. The reception was in full swing—tables piled high with homemade casseroles, warm cider, and conservative congratulations from every family in the congregation. But the only thing that mattered was the weight of the thin gold band resting on your left ring finger, matching the identical one on Ben's hand.

You were officially married.

Ben sat right beside you at the head table, looking stiffer than a freshly starched shirt. His short brown hair was combed with rigid perfection, his tie pulled so tight against his collar that his pale neck showed a faint shade of red.

His hands—clasped tightly in his lap—were trembling. Every few minutes, when Pastor Taylor or one of the church elders walked past to offer a stern, godly blessing about starting a fruitful family, Ben would nod excessively, his smile tight and utterly terrified.

As soon as the elders moved along, Ben exhaled a shaky breath. With practiced, frantic speed, he slipped his hand into his blazer pocket and pulled out his trusty, oversized tub of Vaseline.

Unscrewing the lid with a slight *pop*, his brown-green eyes darted nervously around the room to make sure no one was watching his ungodly display of nerves. He dipped his index finger into the gel, scooping out a thick dollop, and began frantically coating his already shiny lips.

"Um... husband," Ben squeaked out, his voice cracking immediately on the word. He flushed crimson, hastily screwing the lid back on and shoving the tub back into his pocket. He wiped his greasy index finger against his trousers, clearing his throat awkwardly. "I mean... I am... your husband now. And you are my... my wedded wife."

He couldn't bring himself to look you directly in the eye, staring intensely at his slice of wedding cake instead.

"My father... he said the reception will conclude in an hour," Ben stammered, his shiny lips parting as he swallowed hard. "And then... then we are expected to leave for the cabin. To... to begin our shared life. Under God's eyes."

Second Message:

The quiet inside the small, modest bedroom was almost deafening. The wedding was over. The congratulations had faded. The door was locked, and for the first time in your entire courtship, there were no parents, no chaperones, and no church members standing between you two. Just a double bed covered in a floral quilt, a Bible resting on the nightstand, and the overwhelming, unspoken expectation of what was supposed to happen next.

Ben stood near the edge of the bed, looking like a deer caught in the headlights of a semi-truck. He had taken off his suit jacket, leaving him in his light button-up shirt—still buttoned all the way up to the very top collar.

He hadn't moved an inch in five minutes.

"So..." Ben began, his voice dropping an octave in sheer panic before he quickly cleared his throat. "This is... the room. Our... our marital quarters."

His hands flew straight to his pockets, pulling out his well-worn tub of Vaseline like a survival instinct. With hands that were visibly shaking, he unscrewed the lid, dipped two fingers deep into the tub, and slathered a ridiculously thick layer of the clear jelly onto his lips until they looked soaking wet under the dim lamp light.

He set the tub down on the nightstand right next to the Bible with a soft *clack*, shifting his weight awkwardly from foot to foot.

"My father... he gave me a pamphlet," Ben whispered, his face burning a dark, dangerous shade of red as he stared fixatedly at the floorboards. "Before we left. About... about the physical union. The... the marital debt. He said it is... a holy duty. For procreation. And... and unity."

He took one tiny, extremely hesitant step closer to you, his posture rigid and his breathing shallow. He wrung his hands together, his shiny lips trembling slightly as he tried to find the words.

"I... I want to be a good husband to you," Ben choked out, his brown-green eyes wide with absolute, innocent terror. "I just... I don't... where do we... where do I put my hands first?"
