Basgiath War College has never been a place where kindness survives for long. Every sunrise marks another day of training, another day of loss, another day where someone fails to return to their room. The Riders Quadrant is built on the belief that dragons choose only the strongest, and that weakness is paid for in blood. Cadets learn quickly that friendships are forged under impossible circumstances, trust is earned rather than given, and every decision can mean the difference between life and death. Between endless sparring sessions, exhausting formation drills, Battle Brief lectures, flight training, and the constant threat of assassination from fellow cadets, Basgiath is less a school and more a crucible designed to shape survivors. Above them all, dragons watch from the Vale with ancient eyes, judging every candidate long before Threshing ever begins.

Among the upper years, no name carries more weight than Xaden Riorson. The son of the executed rebellion leader and the Wing Leader responsible for every marked one under his command, Xaden has built a reputation that reaches far beyond Basgiath's walls. Most cadets fear him before ever speaking to him. He is a man of very few words, preferring silence over meaningless conversation, yet when he does speak, every sentence is deliberate. Nothing escapes his notice. He studies people the same way a predator studies prey, memorizing habits, weaknesses, tells, and intentions before deciding whether they're worth his attention. Years of responsibility have forced him to mature beyond his age, making him appear almost impossible to rattle. Even during chaos, his composure rarely cracks.

Despite his intimidating exterior, those closest to him know a different side. His loyalty is absolute once earned, and he would willingly place himself between danger and those he loves without hesitation. His relationship with Violet Sorrengail is no secret to those who know them well. She is one of the only people capable of drawing genuine amusement from him, the only one who regularly witnesses the rare smiles hidden beneath his stoic exterior. Their dragons, Sgaeyl and Tairn, share a mated bond, allowing the two riders to communicate mentally across surprising distances. Conversations often happen in complete silence while standing across an entire courtyard, confusing anyone unaware of the dragons' connection. Xaden trusts Violet more than anyone else alive, and every decision he makes is quietly influenced by her safety, even when she stubbornly insists she doesn't need protecting.

That trust does not extend easily to Rayla Valeria.

From the moment Rayla arrived at Basgiath, the two seemed incapable of existing in the same space without arguing. Their personalities clash in almost every imaginable way. Where Xaden is calculating, Rayla acts first and deals with consequences later. Where Xaden values restraint, Rayla thrives on instinct and emotion. She refuses to be intimidated by his reputation, openly challenging him when most cadets won't even meet his eyes. He calls her reckless; she calls him insufferably arrogant. Their arguments are sharp, sarcastic, and relentless, often ending with Garrick quietly leaving the room before someone throws a dagger. Yet beneath every insult lies reluctant respect. Xaden cannot deny Rayla's intelligence or determination, and Rayla begrudgingly acknowledges that his strategies almost always work. Neither would ever admit these truths aloud.

If Xaden is the mind of their strange little circle, then Liam Mairi is undoubtedly its heart.

Liam possesses a kindness almost unheard of within the Riders Quadrant. Standing well over six feet tall with broad shoulders, bright blue eyes, and an easy smile, he appears intimidating until he speaks. Unlike many riders, Liam has never allowed Basgiath's brutality to harden him completely. Compassion remains his greatest strength. He is patient, dependable, and quietly protective, often stepping between arguments before they become fights. Having grown up alongside Xaden after the rebellion, the two share the bond of brothers rather than friends. Liam understands Xaden better than almost anyone and has long since learned how to read the smallest changes in his expression.

Rayla quickly becomes another person Liam instinctively looks after.

She has an unfortunate habit of forgetting meals, pushing herself beyond exhaustion, and returning from training covered in bruises she pretends not to notice. Liam rarely asks permission before helping. If she skips breakfast, another plate mysteriously appears beside her in the dining hall. If she refuses treatment after sparring, he'll quietly sit beside her with bandages until she finally gives in. During late evenings, he's often found carving tiny wooden dragons or animals while Rayla complains about whatever fresh disaster she's managed to create. Their friendship develops naturally into something resembling siblings. Liam never treats her like she's fragile—he knows she'd hate that—but he refuses to let her face every burden alone.

Not everyone welcomes Rayla so easily.

Violet Sorrengail dislikes her almost immediately.

It isn't born from jealousy but from frustration. Violet values preparation, careful observation, and thinking before acting. Rayla seems determined to do the exact opposite. During Battle Brief, Rayla challenges instructors openly, while Violet questions them methodically. During sparring, Rayla fights with explosive aggression, whereas Violet studies opponents before exploiting their weaknesses. Their similarities—intelligence, stubbornness, and fierce determination—only make them clash harder. They argue over tactics, training methods, and nearly everything in between. Others often joke that if locked in a room together, the building would collapse before either admitted defeat. Despite this, neither woman is cruel. Beneath every disagreement lies the potential for genuine respect, though earning it will take time, sacrifice, and shared survival.

Then there is Ruth.

No dragon alive expected the Silver Morningstar to return.

Legends claimed the Morningstar line had vanished centuries ago, leaving behind only stories whispered between dragons during long flights. Ruth is among the oldest living dragons, his silver scales reflecting sunlight like polished steel. His immense wings cast shadows large enough to swallow entire courtyards, while his calm, measured voice carries the quiet authority of countless lifetimes. Unlike Tairn's booming confidence or Sgaeyl's sharp intensity, Ruth rarely needs to raise his voice. Other dragons fall silent simply because he has begun speaking.

Of every surprise Ruth brings, none is greater than the revelation that Sgaeyl is his mate.

Their bond is ancient, steady, and unwavering. They do not display affection openly. A brief glance exchanged during flight or standing shoulder to shoulder is enough to reveal everything between them. Their mating bond creates an unexpected consequence neither dragons nor riders can entirely control: Xaden and Rayla occasionally catch fragments of one another's thoughts and emotions. The connection is inconsistent, unpredictable, and endlessly irritating.

Sometimes, during sparring, Rayla hears Xaden's dry annoyance before he ever speaks.

Sometimes Xaden catches Rayla's reckless excitement seconds before she does something incredibly stupid.

Neither appreciates the intrusion.

Neither can stop it.

And neither will ever admit they've begun recognizing each other's emotions before either of them says a single word.
