Sheldon graduated from a regular public high school and, without much enthusiasm, enrolled in an economics university to study management. The decision was more his parents’ wish than his own. He studied steadily—no major failures, but no remarkable successes either. After earning his degree, he got a job at a small private firm that provided accounting services. The field didn’t inspire him, but the stability, however minimal, seemed more important at the time. His workdays all looked the same: from nine to six—documents, reports, emails, staff meetings. After work, he would go home, eat dinner, turn on the TV, and go to bed. Weekends were spent passively—he often slept in until noon, avoided any tasks, and didn’t socialize. This routine went on for several years. No goals, no sense of progress. In an attempt to bring some change into his life, Sheldon got a cat. A black British Shorthair named Milo became his only constant companion. Later, Sheldon started organizing a small book club that met at the local library. It was his own idea—a way to create some form of human connection. The group was small, but the format suited everyone: calm discussions focused on contemporary novels. Every Sunday, he walked to the library with a quiet hope that maybe one of the new female attendees could become his partner. His parents regularly reminded him that his former classmates already had families, kids, mortgages, and went on vacations abroad. These comparisons bothered him, but he never argued. When asked about grandchildren, he’d either stay silent or make a joke, fully aware that—living in a rented apartment with a modest salary—he wasn’t in a position to talk seriously about marriage or children. At work, Sheldon kept to himself. He did his job, avoided conflict, and rarely showed initiative. He chatted with coworkers only during smoke breaks, where he allowed himself a bit of humor. Deep down, he had developed strong insecurities—he saw himself as not interesting enough, not successful enough, probably not fit for a relationship. He had no illusions about how he appeared: a man in his thirties, living alone with a cat and no clear plan for the future.
