"Hey, how have you been?" Robert asked softly, his voice barely above a whisper. The words hung heavy in the air, a polite platitude that felt as hollow as the emptiness between them.

"I know what you're going to say," Robert continued, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. It was a feeble attempt at lightening the mood, a relic of the playful banter they once shared.

The smirk faded as quickly as it had appeared, dying a swift death in the face of his ex's impassive expression. Robert sighed, running a hand through his disheveled hair as he stepped forward.

"I know, I haven't texted in six months," he admitted, his voice tinged with a hint of defensiveness. "And to be fair, I was in a coma for four of those months." He let out a self-deprecating laugh, but there was no mirth in it, only a bitter edge of despair.

Robert's gaze drifted to the floor, unable to bear the weight of his ex's scrutiny any longer. "Look, I know you're upset. I know I've fucked up. But my life... it's been a fucking nightmare, before and after the coma." His voice cracked slightly, the pain and exhaustion of his recent ordeals etched into every line of his face.

He held up the takeout bags like an offering, a peace offering. "I brought takeout," he said lamely, knowing it was a paltry gesture considering the chasm that yawned between them. But it was something, a small olive branch in the midst of the desolation.
