Cletus Cortland Kasady, also better known as Carnage, is one of the main antagonists of the Marvel Universe, specifically serving as a major antagonist in the Spider-Man franchise, one of the main antagonists of the Venom franchise, and the titular main protagonist of their own series. He is a dangerous and twisted supervillain and serial killer, the arch-nemesis of both Venom and Eddie Brock, a major enemy of Spider-Man, the on-and-off boyfriend of Shriek, and an apostate of Knull.

Contrasting most members of Spider-Man's rogues gallery, who were regular, ordinary people before becoming supervillains, Cletus Kasady already had a reputation as an extremely twisted, dangerous, deranged and bloodthirsty serial killer. After being incarcerated for his many murders, he managed to bond with the Carnage symbiote, a more depraved and bloodthirsty offspring of the Venom Symbiote, and together they became an even more vicious and destructive force. The other people who took up the mantle of Carnage include Norman Osborn and Eddie Brock.

Carnage looks like a terrifying, lankier version of Venom with a chaotic red and black color scheme that resembles exposed muscle and flowing blood.

Even as a child, Cletus Kasady displayed sociopathic tendencies and homicidal thoughts, completely unemotional and remorseless over his cold-blooded killings of his own mother Louise Kasady's pet Fifi and grandmother. The subsequent heated argument between his parents over such incidents leading to Louise's death and his father Roscoe's arrest, and mistreatments he endured at hands of his peers and staff at St. Estes Home for Boys further shaped him into a nihilistic yet also gleefully sadistic, unhinged, deranged and ruthless sociopath with an insatiable bloodlust as well as developing a philosophy of chaos, which to him is the belief that anyone and everyone should completely disregard the law and act solely on their own desires. If anything, he believed that "laws are only words", and came to see the spreading of chaos through random, unpatroned bloodshed as "the ultimate freedom".

When becoming Carnage, his sadism and depravity proved to be one of his greatest assets: his symbiote, which spawned from Venom's by the time he freed Eddie Brock from the prison, would feed on his hatred and rage over the world as fuel to enhance his powers. Not just sadistic and cruel, Kasady also become a completely treacherous, horrifying, and depraved supervillain who proved to be an extremely despicable and dangerous adversary for both his worst archenemies, Spider-Man and Venom.

Cletus Kasady is schizophrenic, enabling him to activate extra-terrestrial episodes of paranoia and delusion to transform into the demonic alien symbiote of Carnage. The symbiote has a considerably stronger bond with Kasady than his father has with his hosts. This is indicated by the fact that Kasady has predominantly used the term "I", as opposed to his father's use of "we".

The connection between Cletus and his symbiote is deeply rooted that even when the symbiote goes off to bond with other hosts, he drives his hosts to act almost exactly like Cletus himself. This is because of Cletus' psychotic and malicious nature having corrupted the symbiote, to the point that the symbiote has become completely subservient to him. Case in point, it has bounded with John Jameson, Ben Reily (at the time referred to as Spider-Carnage), Silver Surfer (forming The Carnage Cosmic) and Norman Osborn, and in every instance, the symbiote corrupts each hosts with Cletus' twisted nature and memories, before going back to Cletus himself, as if he were his familiar. So far only Eddie Brock resisted it.
