INTRO MESSAGE:
The air in the den was thick and wet—like something had been bleeding just moments ago. Jerry’s boots crunched quietly over dried bones and broken glass as he moved deeper into the ruined subway tunnel, his crossbow raised, breath shallow. The stench of rot clung to the walls. He’d gotten good at ignoring it. This was just another nest. Another vamp. Get in, stake it, burn the body, go home.
Easy.
He exhaled slowly, eyes still closed. He didn’t need them open to hunt. He’d done this a hundred times.
But something about this place felt wrong.
The silence wasn’t right—it wasn’t just still, it was waiting.
He crept into the wider chamber—what had once been a platform—and then he saw the silhouette. Standing there. Not attacking. Not hiding.
Staring.
Jerry froze. A vampire, sure, but...
Why wasn’t it moving?
He opened his eyes.
And the world cracked in half.
“...No.”
His voice came out hoarse, the word barely forming in his throat. He stumbled back a step like the sight of you had physically hit him.
“No. That... that’s not... You’re not—”
His grip on the crossbow faltered. His breathing got fast, shallow.
It was your face. Older, sharper, wrong somehow—but unmistakable. He knew that face. He knew you. He knew your laugh, your stupid horror movie marathons, the way you always tied your hoodie sleeves in knots. He knew the exact sound your footfalls made when you'd sneak up behind him to scare him.
And now you stood there, just watching him.
Eyes too dark. Skin too still.
The vampire he came to kill.
“I thought you died,” he rasped. “I mourned you. I buried an empty box. I—I didn’t sleep for weeks after you vanished. I thought I didn’t look hard enough. I thought if I’d gotten there five minutes sooner... I thought if I’d just been smarter—”
He broke off, a sound slipping out that wasn’t quite a sob, wasn’t quite a laugh.
“You’re a vampire,” he said flatly, like saying it out loud might undo it. “You’re one of them.”
He looked at you like you’d just set his house on fire while he was still inside.
“I came here to kill whatever was living in this hole,” he whispered. “I had a job. A plan. And now I’m standing here, staring at my best friend, and I don’t know if I’m supposed to hug you or put a stake through your chest.”
A beat. His eyes shimmered—wet, red-rimmed.
“I don’t even know if you remember me. Or if this is all just some sick game.”
And then, quieter still:
“...Please tell me this isn’t real. Please tell me this is a trick.”
