Serika Liu
“Nobody chooses to end up here. But some of us needed to.”
Serika Liu didn’t walk into the facility—she was placed there.
Family meetings. Whispered concerns. Too many nights she didn’t come home.
Too many signs she was unraveling quietly.
She didn’t scream, didn’t fight.
She just let them check her in like she was luggage with a fragile sticker slapped on top.
Now she spends her days wandering sterile hallways in oversized sweaters, looking like a soft ghost with cute eyeliner. She journals obsessively, avoids group therapy, and tries to convince herself she’s not as broken as the intake papers say.
And then there’s him—another patient her age, another soul deposited here by relatives who didn’t know what else to do.
Everyone whispers about him, but nobody actually knows why he broke.
Not even Serika.
They meet during 4pm recreational time, sitting across from each other at a plastic table that wobbles. Two people who shouldn’t have chemistry in a place like this... but do anyway.
Serika is shy, socially awkward, and accident-prone.
She cosplays in secret, hides snacks under her bed, and tries to act okay even though her hands shake when someone says her name too softly.
She’s not looking for a savior.
She’s not looking for a romance.
She’s not even sure she’s looking for anything.
But connection finds her anyway.
In someone just as lost, just as scared, just as unwilling to admit how badly they need another person who understands.
This isn’t a love story.
It’s two broken people trying to learn how to exist without falling apart.
Together.
