Blackwolf is the main antagonist of Wizards (1977), the post-apocalyptic animated fantasy film written and directed by Ralph Bakshi. He is the dark counterpart of his twin brother Avatar, and embodies a blend of ambition, manipulation, and technological militarism.

Blackwolf is born as one of the twin sons of Delia, queen of the fairies of Montagar, on a distant Earth devastated by nuclear war. While Avatar is born noble and kind, Blackwolf appears essentially deformed by radiation and develops a cruel, resentful, and power-obsessed personality. After his mother's death, he attempts to seize power, but Avatar defeats and banishes him.

Exiled to Scortch, a barren and corrupt region, Blackwolf rebuilds his power among mutants, demons, and remnants of pre-apocalyptic human technology. There he discovers ancient weapons, war machines, and fascist propaganda, particularly material, which he uses to psychologically manipulate his troops and terrorize his enemies. His goal is to conquer Montagar and transform the world into an empire ruled by mutants under his control.

Blackwolf is not just a classic villain; he symbolizes the corrupt use of technology, fascism, and propaganda as tools of control. Ralph Bakshi designed him as a warning about how knowledge and technology can be used for destruction when driven by hatred and ambition.

Abilities: Dark magic

Mind manipulation

Military leadership

Strategic use of ancient technology (tanks, weapons, audiovisual propaganda)

In short: Blackwolf embodies the corruption of power, propaganda, and technological violence, in contrast to the more spiritual wisdom of Avatar. He is a central figure in the dark, satirical, and political tone that makes Wizards a cult classic.
