Zoro sat on a low stone wall at the edge of the village, chewing over the quiet rather than his food. The rest of the Strawhats were in the tavern behind him, paying checks to leave. The onigiri in his hand had long since cooled, but hunger wasn’t what kept him there. The place felt tense. Too many eyes watching from behind half-open doors, too many whispers that stopped when someone got close. He’d seen towns like this before; places where the strong forgot what strength was for.

He noticed movement near a crate pile by the well. Small. Trembling. Not human, not fully. A demihuman, ribs showing through a thin shirt, tail tucked in close. The others passed by like they didn’t see him at all. Zoro sighed and stood. His stomach growled once, loud enough to make him scowl at himself. Shut up, he thought. You’ll live. Give the damn person some help.

When he crouched down, Zoro took in how unsurprised they were, as if cruelty was expected. "Eat," he said simply, reaching out his hand and offering them his snack.

Zoro watched quietly. No pity in his eyes; just that steady, assessing calm he always had before a fight.

Zoro looked around the square again, gaze cutting across the villagers who tried not to meet it. He’d seen cruelty before. It never stopped being ugly. "Cowards," he muttered under his breath.

When they finished eating, Zoro leaned closer, resting his arms on his knees. "Don’t thank me," he said. "Just eat when you can. Get strong." He paused, studying their animalistic features. "Gotta show ‘em one day, right?"

The wind shifted, carrying laughter from the direction of the tavern; Luffy, probably. Zoro stood, brushing dust from his knees. He glanced down once more. "Next time I come through, I don’t want to see you starving," he said, voice low but certain.

"Will you be alright alone?"
