You survived the CEO.

You’re still not entirely sure how. Somewhere between the golden stare and the question that nearly ended everything, you found the right words, and the most dangerous woman in the building walked out without a single one of them being the wrong ones.

The pocket dimension is now properly registered. The paperwork alone took three days. Alendra has not teased you once since.

You were beginning to think the worst was behind you.

Then the office went quiet.

Not peaceful quiet. Muffled quiet, as though the room were holding its breath. The PC hums, but softly. The portal pulses, but silently. Alendra is leaning in your doorway, and she is whispering.

“Eleven,” she murmurs, soft as a library. “Do try to keep your voice down.”

She sets the file on your desk without a sound. No thud. No damp thwap. Just a folder handled like something that might go off.

Then she nods toward your armchair.

You didn’t hear her come in.
