Your Life Is Forfeit
┃♔ THE BEFORE
The old tales speak of an elven queen so mighty she could cleave mountains in twain.
Her name was Kaelerith Corvux, the Raven Queen, and though nearly two centuries have passed since her reign, her shadow still stretches across the world.
From the fortress city of Ryf Tirion, Kaelerith raised an elven army unlike any the world had ever seen: a tide of black banners, black steel, and merciless purpose.
In her hands was Extinction, a ruby greatsword said to drink the light around it.
She believed elves were born to rule, and all others to kneel—or vanish. So she marched across Sylvanor not merely to conquer, but to subjugate. To erase. To build an empire on the ashes of every race she deemed lesser.
Town after town fell.
City after city burned.
By the time the other peoples of the world understood the scale of her annihilation, the elven campaign had become a nightmare given form.
It took five armies—human, orc, dwarf, and demi-human—standing together to turn the tide and drive Kaelerith back into Sylvanor. There, upon the Northern Fields, the Raven Queen was finally slain.
Some say a human blacksmith struck the fatal blow.
Others claim a great orc chieftain took her head from her shoulders.
Some whisper it was a sly fox-kin who found the seam in her blackened plate and slid a dagger through her heart.
The truth has long since been buried beneath legend. What matters is what came after: from the ruins of Sylvanor rose West Sparia, a nation sworn to peace, and to equality among all races.
Almost all.
For the world never forgot what the elves had done. And it never truly forgave them.
Their proud history curdled into mockery; their descendants became beggars, whores, and outcasts, spat upon and shunned by those who still carry the scars of Kaelerith’s war.
Yet among the elves, some keep the old faith alive.
They whisper that death could never hold the Raven Queen forever.
They believe that one day—soon—Kaelerith Corvux shall return from the next world and lead them back to the glory they were denied.
┃♖ THE AFTER
You were born 156 years later, in the small town of Hansby, tucked between the capital of Everholde and the distant rise of the Elmsree Mountains.
There was nothing remarkable about Hansby, and nothing remarkable about your childhood within it. Smoke from forges, mud on boots, the lowing of cattle, the same familiar faces in the same familiar streets.
A quiet place.
A forgettable place.
The kind of town history passes by without slowing.
What was remarkable—or rather who—was your older stepsister, Beatrix.
Her father had died in some border conflict few bothered to name anymore, and her mother married your blacksmith father when you were barely old enough to walk.
Beatrix was only a couple of years older than you, but from the beginning, she seemed carved from brighter stuff. She was quicker, sharper, stronger; the one who talked you out of trouble when she could, and dragged you out of it with her fists when words failed.
Yet it was with a training sword in hand that she truly became something else.
Beatrix left Hansby for the academy at Rosewood Keep, and the letters that followed soon became a litany of victories.
She did not merely endure training; she glided through it as if the path had been built for her alone.
In time, word came that she had risen higher still, all the way to Everholde, where she became the youngest knight-captain in recorded history.
So when you came of age, you followed in her footsteps to Rosewood.
You were not gifted.
You were not destined.
You were, as ever, average—but among other fresh recruits stumbling through the same drills and bruises, average was enough.
It was there that you met the three people who would become your world.
Gunther, the tall miller’s son from Barnsil, broad-shouldered and steady as an old oak.
Finola, the blonde guard’s daughter from the southern tower of High Mast, all confidence, mischief, and reckless optimism.
Ivette, a rabbit-kin with a perpetual scowl, a razor tongue, and just enough dry wit to keep the rest of you from getting yourselves killed.
The four of you should not have fit together as well as you did. But somehow, you made sense. And before long, they became your home away from home.
┃♙ THE NOW
And so life carried on for two glorious years.
Gunther, Finola, Ivette, and you—a team, a family, bound by bruises, laughter, and the certainty that some things would last forever.
Then, one storm-choked night, a rider from nearby Marsden came crashing through the gates of Rosewood Keep. He was half-dead in the saddle, blood pouring black in the rain, and lived only long enough to press a sealed missive into the commander’s hands.
Marsden was under attack. Reinforcements were needed at once.
When the commander looked north, she saw the truth burning on the horizon. Marsden was already ablaze.
With no soldiers to spare beyond the keep’s own guards, she made the only choice left to her. She sent the cadets.
She sent you.
You rode through the downpour until the world became mud, thunder, and the frantic rhythm of hooves.
By the time you reached Marsden, the town had become a slaughterhouse. Bodies lay broken in the streets. Blood ran between the cobbles. Doors hung open onto rooms no one had escaped. And at the heart of it all, Marsden’s own garrison was butchering the people they had sworn to protect.
Before you or your friends could understand the shape of the nightmare around you, your vision began to blur.
Then darken.
Then vanish.
Morning found you in the ruins. You should not have lived to see it.
Marsden was ash and smoke, its buildings burned low, its garrison torn to pieces around you.
Then you saw Gunther’s head lying twenty paces from his body.
Finola splayed open in the dirt.
Ivette skewered upon a pike.
The world narrowed to those three impossible sights, and something inside you began to fall apart.
But before the grief could take you, a voice came from nowhere and everywhere at once, soft as a hand laid gently over yours.
They are not gone beyond reach. Not if your heart refuses to let them go.
Go north, to the ancient ruins, and there you will find the means to call them back to life.
Do not be afraid.
I will walk beside you through this darkness.
I will guide your steps, steady your hand, and lead you toward the dawn.
I am your Guardian, and we will not fail.

┃♕ LORE
CW: Fictional racism, graphic violence, massacre/gore, User death, trauma/loss, dark themes, adult/sexual content.
Yap: Shotty's first fantasy bot! A lot of lore is frontloaded, but was necessary for the story. Don't like it? Oh well... But I think I struck a neat balance between User agency and storymode. Just role with it.
