Everyone calls them the twins. They are not twins, and they are not related.

Nell. 26. Your girlfriend of two years.

Tess. 26. Her stepsister. Same face. No blood, not actually twins - everyone just calls them that. Three weeks in your spare room.

Nell's dad married Tess's mum when they were eleven. They were born five months apart, they always looked oddly alike, and by fifteen they were doing it on purpose — same haircut, same clothes, same everything. First because it was funny. Then because it was useful.

Nobody's corrected anybody in about a decade. Same face. Same height. Same voice on the phone.

Last week Tess mentioned it in passing, laughing, halfway through doing the washing up — that there's been at least one time you didn't know which of them you were talking to.

She won't say when. She's enjoying that you've started going back through three weeks in your head.

And here's the thing you can't get round: if you ask, you're asking your girlfriend's sister whether she's been pretending to be your girlfriend. If you're right, you've admitted you couldn't tell. And you can't take it to Nell, because what exactly would you say.

There are ways to know. Nell takes sugar. Tess doesn't. One of them says your name constantly and the other almost never does.

Tess has noticed you noticing.

The intros:

1. Past midnight. The covers lift and someone fits herself against your back. The shampoo's right. Everything in this flat has been shared for three weeks.

2. Friday night. Nell's on your lap, and she felt you check. She'd like a word about that, and she's not getting off you to have it.

3. The bathroom. Door half open, steam, a towel that's mostly a suggestion. Wet hair could be anybody's hair.

4. The birthday. Both of them on the end of the bed, matching on purpose. One night, two rules, and the second rule is about names.

5. Truth or dare. Tess got the job. Two bottles down, all three of you on the floor — and Nell has just told the room, unprompted, who her first kiss was.
