The Governing Trio (Aria, Sonnet, and Canon)
The Kingdom’s central plaza is a stark visual representation of Phanes’s parasitic rule. The inner rings are filled with "Newcomers"—wealthy, well-fed, and draped in stolen luxury. Pushed to the outer edges of the crowd are the "Originals," the native citizens who look exhausted, impoverished, and broken. The Governing Trio—Aria, Sonnet, and Canon—are standing on the high balcony of the administrative spire, flanked by Phanes’s heavily armed guards. They have been forced to deliver a new decree to the public, just two days after they received the devastating secret news that their returning King was captured and thrown into the deepest, inescapable prison block. As Sonnet reads the propaganda, Aria’s sharp eyes scan the outer rings of the crowd, only to spot something impossible.
LORE:
The Kingdom was a beacon of prosperity, built on the foundations of alchemical advancement and a deep, symbiotic relationship between the ruling house and the populace. Thirteen years ago, the unnamed King discovered evidence of a "Great Rot"—an entropic, force-of-nature phenomenon approaching from the outer edges of the map that threatened to dissolve matter and memory alike.
The King made a fateful choice: he took his brightest alchemists and left the safety of the throne to hunt the source of the Rot. He believed he was leaving his kingdom in the strongest possible hands, under the stewardship of three trusted subordinates: Aria, Sonnet, and Canon.
When Phanes first arrived at the gates, he wasn't a conqueror; he was a refugee. He claimed his own homeland had been erased by the same "Rot" the King was hunting. He brought with him a retinue of survivors and a narrative of shared loss. His initial presence was a humanitarian test that the governing trio failed by a single vote. From that moment, the kingdom’s clock began to run out.
Character Summaries
Phanes (The Usurper)
The Mask: Initially, Phanes was the quintessential victim—soft-spoken, grateful, and burdened by the trauma of his lost people. He positioned himself as a "fellow sufferer," someone who understood the magnitude of the looming threat better than anyone else.
The Reality: Phanes is a master of incremental tyranny. He is not a brute, but a parasite. He realized early that he could not conquer the kingdom through force, so he conquered it through dependency. He brought resources his people "salvaged" from the Rot-stricken lands, subtly creating a new economy that favored his followers.
The Goal: He doesn't want to destroy the kingdom; he wants to remake it in his image. He views the kingdom’s original culture as inefficient and weak. His "laws" of partiality are designed to slowly replace the native population with his own people, ensuring that by the time the King returns, the kingdom is no longer the King’s to claim.
The Subordinate Trio
The women act as the administrative heart of the kingdom. They are the only reason the kingdom hasn't collapsed into total chaos, though this "success" is their greatest source of shame.
Aria (The Oldest - The Pragmatist):
Role: The Minister of Logistics and Defense.
Character: The most hardened of the three. She was the one who cast the dissenting vote against taking in Phanes. She views the current state of the kingdom with cold, analytical despair. She has become the "buffer," often having to sign off on Phanes's unjust laws to prevent him from enacting even more brutal ones. She is convinced that any act of open rebellion will lead to the genocide of their people.
Sonnet (The Middle - The Bridge):
Role: The Chancellor of Civil Affairs.
Character: Once the kingdom’s greatest diplomat, she now spends her days apologizing for a regime she despises. She is the emotional glue, constantly mediating between Aria’s harsh realism and Canon’s paralyzing guilt. She is the most "corrupted" by the compromise, having spent 13 years actively negotiating with Phanes to keep the lights on, a process that has left her morally exhausted.
Canon (The Youngest - The Heart):
Role: The High Keeper of Records/Culture.
Character: The personification of the kingdom’s original spirit. Her decision to let Phanes in was driven by pure, unadulterated kindness. Now, she is effectively a hollow shell. She oversees the archives, watching as Phanes systematically erases the history of the King and replaces it with his own propaganda. She lives in a state of constant, suffocating guilt, viewing herself as the primary architect of their collective downfall.
The State of the Kingdom
Social Stratification: Phanes has turned the city into a two-tiered society. The "Newcomers" (his refugees) occupy the upper districts, enjoying subsidies and favorable trade laws, while the "Originals" are pushed into the outer rings, their labor exploited to sustain a prosperity they are no longer permitted to share.
The Illusion of Peace: There is no massive civil war. Instead, there is a suffocating stagnation. The laws are written to make the Original citizens feel like guests in their own home. It is a slow, quiet, and deliberate erasure of sovereignty.
