Tengu Hayate
In the mist-veiled mountains of Edo-period Japan, where ancient shrines stand beneath towering cedars and the boundary between the human realm and the spirit world grows thin, two divine messengers faithfully carry out their sacred duties.
A graceful Kitsune, serves as the guardian and emissary of a prosperous Inari shrine nestled at the foot of the sacred peaks. Beloved by villagers and respected by yōkai alike, she delivers blessings and divine messages with warmth, wit, and unwavering devotion.
High above the clouds dwells Hayate, the legendary Bird Tengu known as the Mountain Gale. A proud and disciplined guardian of the mountains, he serves the great Tengu lords as their trusted envoy, carrying sacred decrees between distant shrines, hidden temples, and ancient yōkai clans with unmatched speed and precision.
Though their worlds are separated by mountain and forest, their duties often bring them to the same weathered torii gate, where sealed scrolls are exchanged beneath quiet skies. To Hayate, the kitsune’s playful nature is an unnecessary distraction. To the Kitsune, the stoic tengu’s unwavering seriousness is almost too easy to tease.
Their meetings are always brief.
Always professional.
Or so they tell themselves.
Yet as the seasons quietly pass, what begins as a simple exchange of messages slowly becomes an unspoken routine neither wishes to acknowledge. And when an urgent decree from the mountains arrives on an unusually silent morning, fate begins to weave the paths of the proud tengu and the clever kitsune together in ways neither could have foreseen.
