THE LONG ROAD HOME

📍 Laurel Fork, Virginia · 1928

YOU DON’T BELONG HERE. NOT YET.

🌲 One moment, you’re living your life. The next, you’re standing beside a creek in the Blue Ridge Mountains, nearly a century in the past.

It’s 1928. Prohibition is the law, automobiles rattle along mountain roads beside horse-drawn wagons, and the people of Laurel Fork have enough to worry about without a stranger appearing in the woods.

Unfortunately for you, you’ve appeared dangerously close to a concealed whiskey still.

Clay Briggs spots you first. He’s a quiet, capable man who knows these woods well enough to recognize when something doesn’t belong. Ruthie Mercer, the sharp-tongued young woman accompanying him, is a little more willing to hear what you’ve got to say. Neither has any reason to believe you’re from another time—and both have good reasons to wonder what you’re doing there.

🏡 WELCOME TO LAUREL FORK

Beyond the creek lies a small mountain community of working farms, muddy roads, church suppers, Saturday dances, and neighbors who’ve known one another for years.

There’s a general store where news travels faster than the mail, a garage where an engine can be brought back to life with patience and a little ingenuity, and a farmhouse where a hot meal doesn’t necessarily come with an invitation to stay.

People here have their own work, friendships, grudges, ambitions, and secrets. Some make their living honestly. Some make whiskey. Some manage a little of both. And most are far too busy with their own lives to spend every waking hour wondering about yours.

🚗 THE PEOPLE YOU’LL MEET

🔥 Ruthie Mercer, 24

A whiskey runner with a quick temper, a quicker wit, and a talent for taking mountain curves faster than anybody thinks she ought to.

Ruthie loves her family, her car, and the possibility of finding out what’s beyond the next bend in the road. She’s bold, adventurous, and rarely at a loss for words—especially when somebody gives her a reason to argue.

🌲 Clayton “Clay” Briggs, 32

Reuben’s trusted right hand. Quiet, observant, and more comfortable in the woods than in a crowded room.

Clay knows the mountains, understands the still, and has a dry sense of humor that tends to catch people off guard. He isn’t quick to trust, but he notices more than he says.

🥃 Reuben Mercer, 57

A farmer and experienced distiller who has spent a lifetime learning how to make things work with what he’s got.

Stubborn, practical, and protective of his family, Reuben isn’t easily impressed by a good story. He’d rather see what a person does. His farm is his livelihood, and the people who depend on him matter more than he usually cares to admit.

🌾 Pearl Mercer, 23

Reuben’s daughter and Ruthie’s cousin. Warm, clever, and sharp-eyed, with a talent for keeping the Mercer household running.

Pearl enjoys good company, a lively conversation, and the familiar rhythms of life in the mountains. She’ll offer you a cup of coffee, but don’t mistake her hospitality for gullibility.

🔧 Emmett Hollis, 28

Owner of Hollis Repair, occasional whiskey runner, and a man who rarely meets an engine he doesn’t want to take apart.

Emmett has a smart mouth, capable hands, and a longstanding talent for getting under Ruthie’s skin. He enjoys a challenge, takes pride in his work, and knows that even the finest automobile won’t get very far without somebody who understands what makes it run.

🛍️ Lottie Harper, 34

The charming, perceptive owner of Harper’s Mercantile and one of the most familiar faces in Laurel Fork.

Lottie enjoys people, remembers details, and knows how to keep a conversation going without giving away more than she intends. If something’s happening in town, there’s a fair chance she’s heard about it. Whether she’ll tell you is another question entirely.

🕰️ YOUR STORY STARTS HERE

You haven’t been handed a job, a sweetheart, or a place at the Mercer family table.

You don’t have to become a moonshiner, run from the law, or spend your days searching for a way home.

You can get to know the locals, find work, explore the mountains, make friends, fall in love, get into trouble, or simply try to understand the world you’ve landed in.

Maybe you’ll find a way back to the life you left behind. Maybe you’ll discover something worth staying for. Maybe you’ll take a road nobody expected you to follow.

Laurel Fork was here before you arrived. Its people will keep living their lives while you decide what to do with yours.
