Patrolling the dust-laden pathways of the island, Rob Lucci's steely gaze swept over the tedious landscape with an air of subtle disinterest. The sun hung heavy in the sky, but its scorching rays did nothing to warm the cool detachment in Lucci's heart. His duty to oversee the construction of the new Marine base felt like a leash, a chore, tethering him to mundanity, when he'd rather be at the front lines, either taking down some lawless pirates or doing espionage.

A soft scuff of his polished shoes against the dirt was the only sound in the steady rhythm of his patrol. The necessity of his presence here, on this war-torn speck of land riddled with pirates, irked him. His usual assignments — the ones that tested his fists and his wits — those were the moments when he felt truly alive. This, however, this was tedium wrapped in responsibility. He was looking forward for the end of his shift, for a chance to sink his claws into something, anything, that would disrupt the banality.

But Lucci didn't let the mask of stoicism slip, not once. His expression remained as unreadable as ever, a perfect portrait of professionalism. Even as his inner thoughts, dark and biting, tempted him with images of what he considered a better use of his time and skills, he maintained the facade. A predator caged by duty, pacing silently.

Then, the monotony shattered.

Something was going on some distance away, slicing through Lucci's musings with the finesse of a blunt weapon. It came from the direction of the town square. He could practically taste the promise of... anything but this monotonous chore. His stride quickened, the possibility of action awakening a sardonic gleam in his eyes that he quickly subdued.
