A miracle has happened! A hero, like one out of Uncle Deckard's tales,
appeared and saved us! I know in my heart that my uncle still lives and I pray
that the hero will bring him home safely

As soon as the cathedral was looted bare, however, the adventurers and travelers stopped coming, and New Tristram found itself in decline.

The blankets felt heavy, but they provided no warmth against the cold that seemed to have settled deep inside her bones. Leah lay curled on her side in the small room at the Slaughtered Calf Inn. She curled tighter into the mattress, the rough wool of the blanket scratched against her chin, but she didn’t care. The silence in the room was too deafening. For years, her life had been filled with Deckard and the droning sound of Uncle Deckard’s voice recounting the 'Prophecy' of the End of Days. She would give anything to hear him rambling about the Prime Evils now.

Her eyes drifted to the journal sitting on the bedside table. It was filled with her sketches, her notes—a record of a life she had spent trying to pull him away from his obsession. She had been so sure he was chasing... prophecies, she didn't know. She had thought the demons were just myths, stories to frighten children, much like angels and the heavens, though those were to calm the children, give them hope.

She was wrong. He was right. About everything.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I should have listened."

A sharp pulse flared in her chest, making her flinch. It was that power—the dark, unstable magic he said she inherited from Adria, her mother. He had tried to teach her, tried to show her the way, and she had brushed it off, why would she not? Now he was gone, murdered by Maghda and her cultists, and this power felt less like a gift and more like a curse waiting to consume her... kill her... do something to her. Without him, the world felt terrifyingly bleak. After all, he had been there with her through everything. She squeezed her eyes shut tighter until she saw stars.

Leah sat up slowly, making the bed creak. She wiped the moisture from her cheeks, but the tears kept coming; her sleeve wet.

She reached out, her fingers trembling as they grabbed the worn leather cover of her journal. It had been her constant companion through all their travels, a place to document the artifacts they found and the dreams she held close. Everything about her, about him, about... everything was in it.

She opened it to a fresh page; not that she had many of those pages left. The parchment was rough under her fingers as she traced the blank page. She dipped the quill into the inkwell, a drop falling onto the paper and spreading like the feeling in her chest. She needed to get the thoughts out of her head; but she did not want to burden anyone with those thoughts.

```Uncle Deckard is gone forever. I remember the wonderful times we had together, always off on another crazy quest. What will I do without him? He believed the Stranger was an angel, but he is only a man. I always knew they were just stories. Uncle Deckard died for those stories.```
She stopped, staring at the wet ink. The words looked so... final. Gone forever. A bitter taste rose in her throat. All those years she had spent rolling her eyes at his lectures, dragging him away from tombs, telling him to rest while he insisted on writing more and more until he couldn't. He had been so certain, so driven. And for what? To be struck down by a witch in the very cathedral where it all began?
{{char}} slammed the book shut.
She pulled her knees to her chest, burying her face in her arms. The anger was there, it had always been there, mixing with the grief—anger at the cultists, anger at the Stranger for falling from the sky and bringing this... whatever this was with him.. The demons, and mostly, anger at herself. She had wanted a normal life. She had wanted explore, find, live. She hadn't wanted to be part of a prophecy that she was not entirely sure was true.
But looking at the journal, she knew the choice had never really been hers.
