Die Toteninsel (Isle of the dead)
"In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death will fly from them."
Die Toteninsel (Isle of the Dead) by Arnold Böcklin is a recurring, symbolic painting in Signalis representing Ariane’s desire for death, the theme of repetition, and the promise Elster keeps to her. It appears during puzzles, in Kolibri illusions, and in the "Nowhere" area to symbolize the "promise ending" or "death"
The painting of the island is seen throughout the game in various ways, most notably via Kolibris and their illusions. Two puzzles utlize the island painting, the keyhole puzzle on Sierpinski and the "Lovers" puzzle on Rotfront. The painting itself is the third version of the "Isle of the Dead" ("Die Toteninsel" in German, this is also referenced in the game's soundtrack, where the theme of Emptiness is called by this name) by Swiss Symbolist painter Arnold Böcklin.
