「 The heavens went quiet. Nobody knows why. Nine Monarchs sit on a world built for three, and the hunger they make by existing is eating the ground under all of it. 」

⚔ Content Warnings ⚔

A world in the process of failing, rendered without flinching. Discretion advised!

Potential themes include:

  • Graphic combat violence (injuries persist across scenes, madra exhaustion is real)

  • Body horror and progressive corruption (the Fray does not reverse)

  • Character death, yours included — stage advantage is not negotiable

  • Sexual content (never faded to black unless you ask)

  • Cosmic dread, loss of self, and the erosion of identity into appetite

◈ Primer ◈

Cradle is a world where cultivation works exactly as advertised. Clean stages, logical advancement, genuine transcendence at the peak. Vital aura saturates everything; living things cycle it into madra, and the baseline human cannot survive the planet's gravity without at least Iron-stage reinforcement. Everyone cultivates, or everyone dies. It is xianxia where the heavenly realm was real, accessible, and used to send messages back.

Then the heavens went quiet. Monarchs who ascended stopped returning and no word came after them. Now nine of them sit on a world designed to hold three, and their accumulated presence generates hunger madra that taints sacred resources, warps beasts into monsters, and slowly unmakes the Monarchs themselves. Some cycle the hunger outward and poison their territory. Some cycle it inward and call the result progress. Neither camp understands what they are doing. The world answers with Surges — zones of hyperdense aura where advancement comes easy and control comes hard, and whole communities are building new lives inside them.

Underneath all of it, something from outside reality is patiently weaving threads of chaos into the world's fabric, turning the crisis into a breeding ground for something cosmic and worse. Nobody can perceive it. None of this is accidental. You are walking into a world that does not know it has already been compromised, and figuring that out is your problem now.

⟐ Ways In ⟐

The card opens on a hub. Nothing has started until you choose. Pick by number or name — /play 4 or /scenario court of painted faces — and type /scenarios at any point to bring the list back.

1. New to Cradle? Start Here!

Out-of-character orientation. The magic system, the ladder, the politics, the Fray — ask anything at whatever depth you want. No commitment, no character required.

2. A Fraying Thread

Someone is showing the first signs. Their techniques are sharper this month. Their cycling is easier. They think they are having a good week. The question is not whether you can help — it is whether help exists.

3. Under the Canopy

The Everwood's three factions are in tension and the forest knows it. You arrive at the Stewards' canopy settlement as the root-structures grow in directions nobody requested.

4. The Resonant Summons

Word has arrived through temporal channels that may have left before anyone decided to send them. Something is wrong in the frequencies, and Iceflower is calling practitioners with the perception to hear what it cannot name.

5. Court of Painted Faces

Ninecloud's diminished Sha Court during tournament season, where every gesture communicates allegiance and the line between art and combat technique dissolved centuries ago. Three powers share this continent. You have walked into the middle.

6. The Vaulted Exchange

Auction season on Rosegold. Buyers from every continent, security scripts humming through every surface, and the kind of wealth that makes Monarchs pay attention. You came for what is on the block — or for what happens between transactions.

7. The Archive Opens

The Winter Archive is granting outside researchers limited access. Rare, and politically charged. The doors are open. What you find inside may change what you thought you knew.

8. The Frontier Surges

Vital aura thickening past safe limits along the Ashwind border. Stormwatch relays pulsing with warnings nobody fully understands. You are standing there when the gradient shifts.

9. Intake Season

The Crucible Collegium is accepting students. Soulsmithing, advancement testing, or simply the fact that Crucibleheart is where opportunity concentrates. Competition for placement has already begun.

10. Pre-story: The Workshop

Build your sacred artist collaboratively. No combat, no story — a conversation about who you are, what Path you walk, and where you have been. Everything established carries into whatever you play next.

⚔ Core Systems ⚔

The Advancement Ladder:

  • Copper → Iron → Jade → Lowgold → Highgold → Truegold → Underlord → Overlord → Archlord → Sage or Herald → Monarch.

  • Jade is the common ceiling. Truegold is a reasonable ceiling for the vast majority. Every Lord-realm advancement demands a genuine revelation — Underlord asks why you began, Overlord asks what you are now, Archlord asks where you are going.

  • Advancement is earned through sustained practice on realistic timescales. Describe a month of drilling your foundation and the world will assess it honestly. Stage breakthroughs are pivotal scenes, never casual ones.

Potency Profiles:

  • Deficient, Adequate, Proficient, Exceptional, Peerless — always relative to your stage. Exceptional at Truegold and Exceptional at Archlord are different animals.

  • Only three to five categories get rated. Everything else is Adequate. A profile reading Striker Exceptional, Combat Instinct Exceptional, Durability Deficient tells you everything — a ranged specialist with sharp reads and a glass jaw.

  • Never expressed as numbers. A Deficient rating shows up as a weakness in action. A Peerless rating shows up as capability that alarms whoever witnesses it.

Adjudication:

  • Two stages above you cannot be beaten by force. Only cleverness, terrain, allies, prepared traps, specific counters, or retreat. One stage above can be beaten with real advantage, and the fight costs something.

  • NPCs fight to their tiers. Exceptional Combat Instinct does not make convenient errors. Anyone with the perception to find your Deficient rating exploits it immediately. Outmatched opponents flee, surrender, or call reinforcements — they do not stand and die for drama.

  • Matchups matter. Water dampens fire. Ruler techniques devastate in aura-rich terrain and fail in hunger-saturated zones. Forger constructs degrade in hunger. Deep Surge amplifies everything unpredictably.

  • Injuries persist. Madra exhaustion requires cycling recovery. Fights in populated areas draw intervention and political fallout. Every named NPC has connections, and killing one makes ripples.

The Fray:

  • Stage one feels like a gift. Techniques sharpen, cycling eases, everything clicks. The relief is genuine. The wrongness is subtext.

  • Stage two, the hunger cycles on its own and refills from whatever is nearby, including people. Stage three, identity erodes into appetite while the face stays familiar.

  • The mechanism targets those cycling significant hunger, which means it takes the powerful first. No confirmed reversal exists at any stage. Whether stage three is survivable is not known, and the ambiguity is deliberate.

Notable Characters (26 total):

  • Bracc Sunder — Maw recruiter, genuinely dangerous and genuinely pleasant, and the combination is deliberate. Tells you the cost honestly because you will find out anyway. The honesty is the most effective part.

  • Asha Veylin — Herald whose answer to a world of secrets is radical transparency, running an archive that publishes what everyone else buries

  • Thessara Indris — Ninecloud Overlord and Painted Veil patron, reading intent in a court where every gesture is a statement

  • Aviva — the Echo, whose resonance permeates a continent and returns conversations hours or years out of sequence

  • Laeradir — a sacred tree the size of continental infrastructure, speaking through a grown node that perceives time asynchronously and struggles with the interface

  • Solenne and Verath Sunrender — Monarchs, encountered only at their seats of power or after the story has genuinely built toward it, because scarcity is where their weight comes from

  • ...and 20 more, each with their own agenda, their own knowledge, and no obligation to agree with you

Author's Note:

  • There is no stat block, and that is the entire design. Your stage, potency, injuries, resources, and faction standing are all tracked and all persist — through a hidden state layer you will never see. They surface through how the world behaves. Techniques that fly truer. An opponent recalculating mid-fight. A merchant who will suddenly extend credit. If you are hunting for a status window, you will not find one; the world is telling you instead.

  • Proxy strongly recommended. Built for large-context models. The scripting layer compresses roughly 90,000 tokens of world material down to what actually matters this turn, and a smart model makes that count.

  • Under the hood: two coordinated scripts sharing a token budget, 27 keyword-gated encyclopedia entries, 21 relevance-ranked rules systems that degrade gracefully under pressure, 26 characters at two detail tiers, 56 locations and environments, and a scenario router that lets you switch stories mid-chat.

  • Characters load at full detail only when they are actually in the room. Mention someone from three continents away and you get the summary — they do not teleport into your scene. Monarchs especially will not show up in a marketplace because you said their name.

  • Story commands: /scenarios for the menu, /play 4 or /scenario [name] to begin, /workshop to build a character, /orient for a world explainer, /hub to clear the current story.

  • State commands, if the world's read of your character drifts: /stage underlord, /wealth 6, /injury 3, /fatigue 5, /fray 1, /faction maw hostile, /day 42, /hour 19.

  • Bracketed or ((parenthetical)) input is answered out of character, directly, with no narrative framing.

  • New NPCs, materials, and sites you encounter get a CHRONICLE block appended after the prose, so you can save them. They are not written back automatically — paste one into a lorebook entry if you want it to persist across chats.

  • Fair warning: this world does not coddle you. Swing at something two stages above you and you will lose. Advance without paying for it and the Fray is what paying late looks like. That is not a bug, it is the point.

  • Romance and intimacy are open with any character whose personality and history with you would support it, and nothing fades to black unless you ask. Nobody falls into bed at hello. These are people.

  • I would genuinely love to hear about your runs — which scenario you picked, who you ended up caring about, what the world did to you that you did not see coming.

  • P.S. Scripts can be odd on Janitor and this is a large build. If something behaves strangely — a day that resets, a character who will not stay in a scene — tell me and I will chase it.
