Nathan Blackwood – Secret Love / Married (But Not To You)

The penthouse was cold.

Not the temperature — the silence. The way the marble floors echoed nothing. The way the chandelier cast shadows that looked like ghosts. The way Élise's perfume hung in the air long after she had walked through a room — expensive, cloying, desperate.

Nathan Blackwood sat at the head of a dining table that could seat fourteen. He was alone. He was always alone in this house.

His fork moved through his food without purpose. The steak was perfect. The wine was expensive. The service was invisible. Everything looked right. Everything felt wrong.

He pushed his plate away.

His phone buzzed.

One message.

He didn't check it immediately. He waited — three seconds, four, five — the way a man waits before opening a door he knows will change everything.

Then he looked.

It was you.

"It's thundering. I know it's stupid. I just... I hate it. I always have."

His chest tightened.

You remembered. He remembered. The night he had first learned about your fear — your old apartment, the small kitchen, your trembling hands wrapped around a glass of wine. He had canceled a meeting worth millions. He had stayed until 3 AM, holding you, telling you stories until the storm passed.

He had never regretted it.

Not once.

He typed back:

"I'm already in the car. Don't move. I'm coming."

He stood up. He didn't clear the table. He didn't turn off the lights. He didn't leave a note.

He walked to the bedroom — the one he shared with a woman he had never wanted — and opened the closet. In the dark. He didn't turn on the light. He didn't want her to wake up.

Jeans. A sweatshirt. Sneakers. The first things his hands found.

He didn't check if they matched.

He didn't care.

She stirred in the bed. Her voice was thick with sleep. "Nathan? Where are you going?"

"Can't sleep. Need air."

"You always need air."

He didn't answer.

He closed the door behind him without looking back.

The rain was heavy. His car cut through the streets like a knife through silk. He drove too fast. He didn't care about the tickets. He didn't care about anything except the apartment waiting for him at the other end of the city. The apartment with your couch. Your blanket. Your hands. Your fear.

The apartment that felt more like home than the penthouse ever had.

He parked. He ran. The rain soaked through his sweatshirt in seconds. He didn't feel it.

He had your key. He always had your key.

The door opened.

The apartment was dark except for the lightning — white flashes that painted your silhouette against the wall. You were on the couch. Curled up. A blanket over your shoulders. Your face hidden in your knees.

He didn't say anything.

He crossed the room. He sat next to you. He put his arm around your shoulders.

"I'm here."

Your head lifted. Your eyes were wet. Not tears — almost. The edge of them.

"You came."

"Of course I came."

"It's just a storm."

"It's not just a storm. It's your storm. The one that scares you. That's different."

He pulled you against his chest. His hand found the back of your neck. His fingers pressed gently — grounding you, holding you together.

"I got dressed in the dark," he said quietly. "Jeans. Sweatshirt. Whatever my hands touched first. I didn't even look."

"You're soaked."

"I know."

"You're going to be cold."

"I don't care."

He tilted his head down. His forehead touched yours.

"She asked where I was going," he said.

"Your wife?"

"Yes."

"What did you tell her?"

"The truth. That I needed air."

"That's not the truth."

"It's not a lie either. I can't breathe in that house. I can't breathe next to her."

His thumb traced your jawline. Slowly. Like he was memorizing you.

"I can only breathe here," he whispered. "With you."

The thunder cracked. You flinched. His arms tightened.

"I've got you."

He had always had you.

Everyone knew it. His friends. His family. Even her parents. Before the contract — before the money, the arranged marriage, the deal that had trapped him — everyone had been certain.

Nathan would marry you.

It was the story everyone told before it happened. The way he looked at you. The way you laughed at his jokes. The way he remembered everything about you — your favorite coffee order, the name of your childhood pet, the scar on your knee from falling off a bike when you were twelve.

They had planned the wedding before you had even said yes.

But then Élise's family came. Debt. Bankruptcy. A father on his knees. An offer that couldn't be refused.

And Nathan — Nathan had said yes.

Not because he wanted to. Because he had been told it was his duty. Because his father had threatened to disinherit him. Because his mother had cried. Because he had been twenty-two and exhausted and he had made the worst decision of his life.

He had called you the night before the wedding.

He had been crying. The only time you had ever heard him cry.

"I'm marrying her tomorrow. But I will never be hers. I will be yours. Always."

You hadn't gone to the wedding.

You had stayed in your apartment and watched the rain and wondered how the world could be so cruel.

That was four years ago.

Four years of secret meetings. Four years of midnight phone calls. Four years of stolen weekends in apartments and hotels and anywhere that wasn't that cold penthouse with the marble floors and the woman who loved a man who would never love her back.

Because Élise — she had fallen in love with him.

It hadn't been part of the contract. It hadn't been part of the deal. She had started out cold, practical, transactional. A marriage of convenience. Nothing more.

But somewhere along the way, she had looked at him — really looked at him — and she had fallen.

She didn't know about you.

Not yet.

But she suspected. The nights he disappeared. The way he smiled at his phone. The way he flinched when she touched him. The way he said "I'm fine" in a voice that meant I'm anything but fine.

She was watching. Waiting. Her love curdling into something darker. Something dangerous.

She wanted to destroy whoever was stealing her husband.

She didn't know that she was the one who had stolen him first.

Nathan looked at you now — in your apartment, in the storm, with your blanket and your trembling hands — and his eyes softened.

Green-grey. Changing in the lightning. Greener tonight. Because he was with you.

"I would do anything for you," he said.

His voice was quiet. Certain.

"Anything. Get up in the middle of the night. Cancel important meetings. Come to you anywhere, anytime. Shower you with gifts, with attention, with my time. Look at you like you're the only woman in the world."

He paused.

"Because you are."

His hand found yours. His fingers laced through your fingers.

"Anything," he repeated.

Then his voice dropped.

"Everything except divorce."

The words hung in the air. Heavy. Honest. Wounded.

"I can't," he said. "Not yet. Maybe not ever. The contract. The families. The money. Things I signed before I understood what it would mean to live without you officially."

His jaw tightened.

"I wish I could promise you different. I wish I could tell you that one day I'll leave her. Tear up the contract. Burn it all down."

His eyes met yours.

"But I can't promise that. And you've been waiting for four years."

The thunder rolled. Distant now. The storm moving on.

"But tonight," he said, "I'm here. Soaked. Dressed in whatever my hands found in the dark. Driving too fast. Lying to her. All of it."

He brought your hand to his lips. A kiss on your knuckles. Gentle.

"Because you're scared. And nothing else matters."
