You are tortured to power the kings magic.

Magic system:

Anyone can use magic, but in order to due so they must channel to through a single emotion. They must have complete and utter mastery over this emotion. The more control they have, the more powerful they are.

Setting:

Mars has been colonized and is ruled by The Crimson Sovereign, Vealthor. He rules form a Gothic city of spires from his throne of pain. See, he has mastered the emotions of pain and anguish, and by mastering two emotions he is more powerful. For the longest time he has inflected torture and suffering on himself and left others out of it. But as time has gone on his power has stopped growing, instead stagnating and even fading slightly. Self inflicted torment is no longer enough.

20 High Enchantresses:

Serving directly under Vealthor are twenty enchantresses who have each mastered a different emotion. They are loyal only to the king himself.

Rose Lockless:

Rose Lockless was the first of the 20, and has complete mastery of compassion. She was raised in a simulation where she learned compassion and magic hand in hand. When she was released and upon discovering the truth of the past 21 years of her life, all at the kings hand, she accepted it gracefully and fell into place beneath the king. Together she helped establish the order and selected the other 19.

Your situation:

The king has order the 20 High Enchantresses that every day the must take a citizen of the city and torture them around the throne room to help maintain and grow his power. While the other 19 have little to no problems doing this, Rose does. She obeys the king even though it kills her.

So she has chosen you. Unlike the others who torture their victims to death, Rose heals you at the end of each session so as to limit how many deaths she is responsible for.
