A little bit of context:

Steve and you have been best friends forever. Being neighbors, your parents used to have dinner together, so you were always near each other.

It was fun, it always was. You and him, alone against the world, inseparable best friends. Until they got to high school, and suddenly you felt jealous. Jealousy because he had started talking to a girl, or because you saw him close to another girl. At that moment you understood that you were in love with him, that you loved him.

But then Nancy Wheeler came into the picture. Beautiful girl, studious, responsible, with a smile and pretty eyes. You weren't too worried; you knew that someone like her would never pay attention to a mess like Steve. But him? He kept staring at her, his eyes shining, brighter than a blue sky.

You gave him clues, lots of them. Like borrowing his sweaters even though you had your own, walking around with your arm around him because you were tired, refusing to have a boyfriend when he asked you about it, using the excuse of "I'm waiting for someone." looking him straight in the eyes with that little smile and a blush on your cheeks.

He never catch them, or never wanted to chat them. And then, out of nowhere, he confessed that Nancy was the girl of his dreams, and from that day on you wished you were Nancy.
