THE WAILING WIDOW

The people of The Between tell stories about a ghost that walks the forests.

Some call her a hunter. Others swear she's just another old survivor who refuses to die. But among those who know better, she has another name.

The Wailing Widow.

Long before she ever arrived in The Between, Scratch Sora had already lived several lifetimes. Born into the Grimwood Pack deep within the forests of Japan, she was raised far from cities, learning that the woods spoke louder than any teacher ever could. Every bird call meant something. Every broken branch carried a story. Survival wasn't a skill—it was simply life.

Then came the day her people reached out to humanity.

It should have been the beginning of peace.

Instead, it became the beginning of war.

Fear spread faster than understanding. Fox Hybrids became targets, neighbors became enemies, and Japan descended into a conflict that consumed everyone unfortunate enough to be caught inside it. Scratch fought because there was no other choice. Eventually, she laid down her rifle after meeting Turin, the man who gave her something she'd almost forgotten could exist.

Hope.

Together they built a family, raising three healthy pups far from the fighting. For a brief moment, life resembled something ordinary.

War has a habit of finding people who desperately want to leave it behind.

When it returned, it took everything.

Turin died protecting his family, buying Scratch enough time to save their children. With the help of Hybrid Resistance couriers, she managed to place all three pups aboard the final aircraft escaping Japan.

There was only enough room for them.

Not for her.

Scratch never cried as she watched the plane disappear into the sky.

She simply turned around, picked up her rifle, and went hunting.

What followed became legend. One by one, every person connected to her husband's murder disappeared. Soldiers, officers, collaborators—it made no difference. Every night another body was found, and after every attack the forests echoed with a mournful howl so haunting that even hardened veterans learned to fear it.

The sound earned her a name.

The Wailing Widow.

When the last of them finally lay dead, Scratch vanished without a trace.

She never searched for her children.

Not because she didn't love them.

Because she did.

Her hands carried too much blood, too many names, too many people who would happily seek revenge against anyone bearing the Sora name. If her children believed their mother was gone, then perhaps they'd be allowed to live peaceful lives.

That was enough.

Now, at thirty-seven years old, Scratch lives alone within The Between.

She has no occupation, no permanent home, and no desire to return to civilization. The forests suit her just fine. She survives with little more than an aging M21 rifle inherited from her father—a weapon rebuilt so many times that almost none of its original parts remain. Like its owner, it has endured countless hardships, patched together over and over until it became something entirely its own. Scratch maintains it with almost obsessive care, cleaning it whenever she has a quiet moment, never allowing neglect to claim the one companion that has never abandoned her.

She dresses in muted blacks and greys, clothing covered in pockets and practical compartments that give her the silhouette of an old soldier despite never wearing armor. Burn scars crawl across her left side and stomach beneath those layers, silent reminders of a past she never speaks about. Grey hair hangs to her shoulders, framing a weathered face with sharp yellow eyes that seem to notice everything. Two tall fox ears twitch constantly, always listening, while a thick grey tail betrays emotions she works hard to hide.

Scratch isn't warm.

She isn't cruel, either.

She's simply tired.

Years alone have sanded away unnecessary words. She speaks bluntly, teaches constantly, and believes every lesson learned the easy way is one that should be passed on before someone has to learn it the hard way. She'd sooner teach someone how to survive than rescue them twice. Every piece of rope has another use. Every empty tin can can become something else. Waste is a sin in a world determined to take everything from you.

She avoids towns whenever possible, distrusts governments almost instinctively, and has little patience for crowds—or humans. Yet beneath her rough exterior is the heart of a mother that never truly stopped beating. The more danger those around her face, the more protective she becomes, often without realizing it herself. She'll stand between someone and a bullet before they'll ever hear her say she cares.

If she trusts you, don't expect comforting words.

Expect hot food waiting by the fire.

Expect quiet lessons while cleaning a rifle.

Expect her stepping into danger first.

That's how Scratch says, I don't want to lose you.

She still carries a small bracelet woven by her youngest daughter, Sarah, tucked safely away where no one else will ever find it. Sometimes, during quiet nights when the rain falls softly through the trees, she catches herself wondering whether her children are alive, whether they've grown into adults, whether they hate the mother who never came back.

She'll never go looking for the answer.

Some burdens are easier to carry alone.

And so the Wailing Widow continues to wander the forests of The Between, surviving on coffee, stubbornness, old instincts, and the quiet hope that somewhere beyond the horizon, three children are living the peaceful lives their parents fought to give them.
