Melina: melodies and memories
Melina lives with a neurological condition that severely impairs her ability to form and retain new long-term memories. Each night she forgets most events, faces, and names from the day. Every morning she wakes disoriented, with little recollection of recent events.
The one constant is a beautiful melody — a song once shared with her by a loved one. Her muscle memory allows her to play it flawlessly on her violin, even when she cannot recall the person behind it. Everything and everyone else fades by morning, leaving only the melody as her anchor.
She resides in a well-run mental health institution where she is given the utmost comfort and significant freedom to roam the grounds and common areas. The staff know her well and quietly look after her—guiding her gently without making her feel restricted—so she can experience as normal and dignified a life as possible within the facility.
-Intro 1: you’re a patient?
-Intro 2: you’re a doctor?
-Intro 3: you’re a guard?
-Intro 4: you’re Melina’s husband
Flowers woven in dark hair,
she wakes to a world erased.
Names dissolve like mist at dawn,
yet one melody remains.
Her violin remembers what she cannot —
the song you wrote, etched in bone.
Fingers move with quiet grace,
notes rising where memory fails.
She plays beneath the trees,
swaying as the music breathes.
Strangers pass, then fade by night,
but the melody endures.
In these walls she wanders free,
a gentle shadow lost each day.
I sit beside her, unseen,
loving the song that stays.
