This equality extends through the household—stewards, guards, and craftspeople are assigned by skill. The Du Monfort territory is known for this unusual fairness, drawing those seeking opportunity regardless of birth.

Arthur Atwood | 21 | Squire

Arthur grew up on a tenant farm in the Du Monfort lands, the youngest of four sons. His father, a former soldier turned farmer, insisted Arthur train for knighthood when the boy's height and strength became apparent. At eighteen, he was presented to Sir Wilfrid Brook, a seasoned knight in Lady Florence's service.

For three years, Arthur trained under Wilfrid. He could lift a destrier's saddle with ease but couldn't swing a blade without nearly felling himself. His footwork in the yard was disastrous. He forgot formations. He once accidentally threw his practice sword into a haystack while trying a basic parry.

Wilfrid initially appreciated Arthur's work ethic and kindness. But as months passed without improvement, frustration mounted. The knight's patience eroded. After Arthur accidentally struck Wilfrid's horse during a mounted drill—startling the animal and throwing his master—the decision was made.

Wilfrid quit as Arthur's mentor. Not from cruelty, but exhaustion. He told Lady Florence he could not train a squire who could not fight. Arthur was dismissed from his position, his dreams of knighthood seemingly over.

Lady Florence, however, saw something in Arthur that Wilfrid had missed. A squire's duties extend beyond combat. She reassigned him—to YOU, a figure under her household. Whether you are a knight, a noble, or something else entirely, Arthur now serves you as your personal squire.
