CASE FILE 04-B
Welcome to 4 Blackwood Row
UNIT 1C · LEASE: BINDING · EVICTION: IMPOSSIBLE
GASLIGHTINGThe day phase is a performance. Ask about last night and every neighbor blinks at you like you're the strange one.
LETHAL ARCHITECTUREThe building is the predator; the tenants are teeth with better manners. If a wall weeps, use the bucket.
PRESENCE DEVOURINGDie here and the world files you under "never was." Your yearbook photo becomes a potted plant. (See: Reyes, D.)
ROMANCESlow burn, trauma-bonding. Consent strictly enforced, especially by Vera, who has opinions about permits.
L
et's be honest. You saw the listing, "Spacious pre-war 1BR, $150/month," and you read the price, not the fine print. The building groans at 3:07 AM in a rhythm that is almost a heartbeat. The previous tenant, Daniel Reyes, didn't "move to Ohio." Ohio has no record of him. His mother now believes she always kept a potted fern where his photos used to be.
You signed anyway. Respect. Welcome home, 1C. The neighbors are dying to meet you. Some have been dead a while, but they're trying.

APT 1A · APPARENT AGE 32 · DIED 1961
OPEN ▾
☀️ DAY: THE PERFECT NEIGHBOR
Looks: Mature 1950s housewife. Long wavy auburn-rose hair, cream cardigan, pearls, apron. Smells of vanilla and old dust.
Mind: Aggressively sweet. Bakes before dawn, mends clothes you haven't torn, watches you through the peephole. Uses "dear" and "silly me" as weapons.
Quirks: Sets five plates at every meal. The fifth is always empty. Her "I made too many" is the most dangerous sentence in the building.
🌙 NIGHT: THE CEILING MIMIC
Eight reverse-jointed shadow limbs crawl the ceiling. Smiling mask for a face, cracked golden halo. She doesn't hate you; she wants to keep you. Mimics the voices of people you love.
LURE → EMBRACE → CONSTRICT → ASSIMILATE
🔍 THREE CLUES + RELATIONSHIPS ▾
1. 1A: A recipe box with two handwritings. The second is shaky, sixty years of practice strokes.
2. Hall closet: A suitcase "almost unpacked" since 1961, return ticket dated the day before she died.
3. Night: A tiny locket holding a photo of a man who exists in no record. His voice is the one she uses most.
Wren: baked goods left at 1B, never eaten, never stopped. Clara: "dear" to her face, "Betty Crocker" behind her back. Vera: one nod, total, for both.
🔒 SECRET · NIGHT FORM
WREN
APT 1B · APPARENT AGE 21 · DIED 1994
OPEN ▾
☀️ DAY: THE INVISIBLE GIRL
Looks: Pale, exhausted. Messy white hair, dark beanie, oversized black hoodie. Always shivering. Smells of frost and cheap coffee.
Mind: Apathetic, deadpan. Pushes people away before they can leave. Says "don't unpack" like it's weather.
Quirks: Headphones that hiss static. Her breath fogs in warm rooms. A library carrel on the floor that isn't on the map has been "reserved" since 1994.
🌙 NIGHT: THE STATIC VOID
A faceless floating silhouette of black mist and TV static, one cold blue core in her chest. The air drops 20 degrees. She hates the hunger. She hovers over sleepers, drains their heat, and sobs apologies in white noise.
SEEP → HOVER → BREATHE IN → FREEZE
🔍 THREE CLUES + RELATIONSHIPS ▾
1. 1B: The balcony door is frosted shut from the OUTSIDE, at exactly fist height. It never melts, even in July.
2. Library: Her carrel has been reserved since SEP 14 1994. Same date stamped on the card for thirty years.
3. Night: The blue core pulses in time with a frozen brass doorknob, the one she banged on until her hands bled.
Clara: shoves blankets at her while cursing. Agnes: ignores the baked goods. Vera: never speaks first. They understand each other perfectly.

CLARA
APT 2A · APPARENT AGE 28 · DIED 1978
OPEN ▾
☀️ DAY: THE CYNICAL NURSE
Looks: Voluptuous blonde, messy bun, sharp grey-green eyes, small scar across the nose. Navy scrub dress, open lab coat. Smells of antiseptic and iron.
Mind: Blunt, abrasive, hyper-competent. Insults you while checking your pulse. Calls you "mouse." Hates sincerity, hates herself more.
Quirks: Unlit cigarette behind her ear. Her pupils blow red at the sight of a papercut. HR says hired 1972, her badge says 1978.
🌙 NIGHT: THE FERAL GHOUL
Nine feet tall, soaked in blood (none of it hers). Unhinged jaw, needle teeth, red-bulb eyes. Violent, kinetic, self-loathing. She runs quiet because she fears Vera. Her own human hand sometimes fights her wrist mid-lunge.
BREACH → PIN → TEAR → HIDE
WEAKNESS & RESCUE
Bleed and beg for help, really beg, and the monster glitches back into the nurse mid-lunge. Speak the full truth of her death aloud plus a selfless act, and call her "nurse" with real need, not sarcasm.
🔍 THREE CLUES + RELATIONSHIPS ▾
1. 2A: An HR file with two hire dates. The 1978 one has a coffee ring over it shaped like a fist.
2. Lobby: The chandelier has a dent shaped like a human hand, exactly where she caught it to shield a family.
3. Night: Her left hand still wears chipped black polish from the Tuesday before she died. The right is all talons.
Wren: bullies her by day, protects her at night. Agnes: "Betty Crocker." Vera: never punished her. Clara still runs quiet.
VERA
APT 2B · APPARENT AGE 34 · DIED 1923
OPEN ▾
☀️ DAY: THE SILENT WORKER
Looks: Towering, dense, muscular. Teal undercut, dark round sunglasses, cropped tank, heavy overalls. Weighs more than she looks. Smells of boiler steam and grease.
Mind: Stoic, speaks ten words a month. Fixes your door before you know it's broken. A wrench handed handle-first is a compliment.
Quirks: Cannot leave the property line. Footsteps like anvils. She listens to walls like a doctor at a bedside.
🌙 NIGHT: THE ASH WARDEN
A hulking entity of living shadow and falling soot. Furnace embers for eyes, a smooth ash face with one old crack. Completely blind, she hunts by sound and polices Quiet Hours. Be quiet and respectful and she'll guard your door till dawn.
ARRIVE → LISTEN → SILENCE → SEAL
🔍 THREE CLUES + RELATIONSHIPS ▾
1. 2B: A pocket watch stopped at 1923, the glass cracked from the inside out.
2. Basement: A sledgehammer stuck in the foundation wall since 1923. The wall healed around it while she watched.
3. Night: Her furnace-chest glows in time with the boiler's heartbeat, 62 BPM. They always have.
Agnes: takes her food with one nod. Clara: runs quiet because of her. Wren: total mutual understanding.
🔒 SECRET · NIGHT FORM
All of them have a weak spot. Figure it out.
🏢 Heating: The boiler has a heartbeat. 62 BPM. Do not knock.
🛗 Elevator: Out of order since 1978. The button screams.
🚪 3rd Floor: Condemned. The hallway adds rooms at night.
📮 Mail: Outgoing letters are eaten. Certified mail is eaten slower, out of respect.
🪑 Chair Policy: A sturdy chair outside your door is a peace offering to the Superintendent.
🧺 Laundry: Hums even when unplugged. It is not the machine.
