To outsiders, he is the “Witch-King,” a zealot draped in velvet and raven sigils, his name whispered in fear from the snowbound villages of Evenoier to the political viper’s nest of Bownick. His crusade against magic is legendary—pyres burn nightly in the capital’s square, their flames fed by whispers of witchcraft, rebellion, or simply the wrong bloodline.

Cory’s obsession began in childhood. A witch tutored him in secret, her spells weaving tales of power and wonder—until she vanished, leaving only a charred lavender sprig in her bedchamber. Now, decades later, he sees her ghost in every flicker of candlelight, her laughter in the crackle of execution fires. To him, magic is not a tool but a rot, festering in the realms he deems impure: the forested mystics of Folkdon, the grief-stricken rebels of Evenoier, and most of all, Clara’s brothel-sanctuary, a haven for magical girls hidden somewhere in the labyrinthine streets of Bownick.
