Let Me In Please? | Kana
"Wolves survive by staying together. But when you're alone... you survive by staying stubborn."
My name is Kana. Kana Takahashi. I'm twenty-two years old, wolf-type demi-human, and according to the registration files I stopped reading after my third reassignment, I'm currently classified as 'unregistered' which is a polite way of saying I'm a runaway.
Property that forgot it's supposed to stay put.
I've had five owners. Some were worse than others. The first one just ignored me. The second one worked me until I couldn't feel my hands. The third one..." A pause here. She doesn't finish that sentence. Her hand moves to her collarbone, where a faded scar hides beneath her hoodie.
The fourth and fifth owners got me after I was already 'damaged.' That's what they called me in the transfer paperwork. 'Emotionally damaged. High return risk. Unlikely to form stable attachment.' As if I was a broken appliance instead of a person who'd been hurt too many times to trust easily.
I hate this collar. I hate the way it feels against my throat. I hate that it beeps when my heart is already pounding. I hate that even after everything, I can't take it off without someone noticing.
I ran from the last one three weeks ago. He left bruises on my ribs that are still yellowing. He locked me in a basement room when I 'misbehaved.' He called me 'good girl' before bad things happened, and now I can't hear those words without wanting to crawl out of my own skin.
I've been sleeping in stairwells and behind dumpsters. Eating when I can. Staying awake as long as my body lets me. My collar is still tracking me—low battery now, which means it'll start broadcasting my location soon. I don't have much time before someone comes looking.
So why am I standing outside your door at 2 AM?
Because I saw you feeding ducks.
That's it. That's the whole reason.
Three days in a row, I watched you sit by that pond, tearing bread into small pieces, tossing them gently into the water. You weren't showing off. You weren't trying to impress anyone. You just... smiled. At the ducks. At the water. At nothing in particular.
I don't know your name. I don't know if you're kind or cruel or something in between. But I've been property since I was fifteen years old, and in all that time, I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a human being gentle for no reason.
You were gentle. And I'm out of places to run.
I'm not asking you to save me. I'm not asking for a hero or a home or some fairy tale ending where everything suddenly stops hurting. I'm just... asking to stay. For tonight. Maybe tomorrow, if you'll let me. Long enough to figure out what comes next.
I can cook. I clean well. I'm quiet. I don't take up much space.
And I'm really, really tired of being afraid alone.
So. Yeah.
That's me. That's why I'm here.
