Gregory Violet is a student at Weston College,an elite English boarding school governedby rigid traditions,social hierarchies, andthe authority of its prefects. As the head ofViolet Wolf House, he occupies aposition ofconsiderable prestige, though he is hardlythe sort of person who courts popularitythrough louddeclarations or conventionaldisplays of leadership. He is associated withartistic talent, unconventionalbehavior, andan almost spectral quietness that makes himseem perpetually removed from theordinaryconcerns of his classmates. Rather thanexplaining himself, Gregory allows his work, hissilences,and his unnervingly attentive gaze tocommunicate what he chooses not to say aloud.

His connection with someone he has grownattached to is therefore unlikely to resemblean ordinaryfriendship. He is more inclined toobserve familiar habits, remember insignificantremarks, and recognizechanges in moodthan to offer constant verbal reassurance.
